  17. Your questions: Has Shrewsbury got its own unique words and phrases?published at 16:44 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2017

    Andy Giddings
    BBC Shropshire

We've been looking at the origins and meanings of some common greetings you hear around Shrewsbury this week, in response to a question posed by a reader.

But how unique to Shrewsbury are words like "Mon", "Monner" and "Owd lad"?

We spoke to two Black Country historians who specialise in dialects, who told us that with the exception of "Monner", these words and phrases like "Ow bist?" are all fairly common around the wider West Midlands region and not exclusive to Shrewsbury or Shropshire.

    Shrewsbury Town centre

Brian Dakin from Aston University explained that in the past, when people travelled around the country less, some areas did develop their own unique words or variations of words, especially in more isolated rural areas.

He said this could explain the use of the word "Monner" in Shrewsbury, although he says that word is also used in Worcestershire.
