    Shrewsbury's Polish-born MP Daniel Kawczynski says he is sure the rights of European citizens living in the UK will be secured during the Brexit negotiations.

    He said he supported "the rights of Poles in the UK, just as I support the rights of Brits in the EU" and that he believed in the prime minister's Brexit strategy.

    Mr Kawczynski also criticised an amendment put forward which called for the rights of all EU citizens in the UK to be protected.

    He said it would have weakened the British hand, ahead of any negotiations.

  2. Former Shrewsbury favourite wishes sick fan wellpublished at 15:19 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2017

    The former Shrewsbury Town favourite Ryan Lowe has wished a Bury fan at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital a speedy recovery, after he suffered a cardiac arrest before Saturday's game.

    Lowe, who has played more than 100 times for Bury, is Brian Allen's favourite player, so his son David got in touch with him through Twitter.

    David now says his father is "out of the woods" and in a stable condition and looking forward to seeing more Bury games.

    Another £7.9m has been given to Historic England to help restore Shrewsbury's flax mill.

    The Heritage Lottery Fund gave the project £12m in 2012, but said "increased construction prices and significant technical challenges have escalated costs".

    Picture boards have gone up around Shrewsbury town centre today, to celebrate the town's links with Charles Darwin.

    The mix of historic and modern images from around the world are on display in The Square and at St Mary's Church.

    The boards will remain up for 10 weeks and are all themed around interpretations of Darwin's theories.

    Local businesses and The Hive arts venue are behind the exhibition.

    The archaeologists digging near a small medieval church in Shrewsbury have found a number of animal burials, including a dog which they say appears to have died in childbirth, which was found with six chickens (below, left).

    They have also found three clothes-pins, a carved piece of stones and two small coins (below, right).

    The site is due to be paved over to create parking spaces for a housing estate and the team have also found foundation stones which suggest the church could once have been double its existing size.

  6. Theatre to stage its first in-house productionpublished at 14:01 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2017

    Eight years after it opened, Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn is preparing to stage its first in-house production.

    It will be putting on a performance of Macbeth and is holding auditions to find local actors to play the witches on 21 and 27 February.

    The theatre says it will accept male witches and no experience of performing Shakespeare is required.

    Performances will be between 25 and 29 April.

    People in the Shropshire Council area are likely to face a council tax increase of nearly 4%. 

    The Conservative group which runs the authority is making the recommendation to full council after deciding against putting it up by nearly 5%.

    The winner of the Great British Bake Off, Candice Brown, has been booked to attend this year's Newport Show on 8 July.

    The agricultural show has been promoting itself as a food event in recent years and the previous Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain was the star attraction last year.

    A patient at Oswestry's orthopaedic hospital waited 324 days to be discharged because care was not available at their home, a BBC investigation has found.

    It is one of the most extreme examples of bed blocking in the country, uncovered by freedom of information requests.

    With the average cost of a hospital bed put at £400 a day, that would mean the Oswestry patient's stay cost the hospital trust almost £130,000.

    The head of the Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group, Simon Freeman, says patients are unnecessarily stuck in hospitals because councils are not getting enough money for adult social care.

    A first edition of a book by the Victorian occultist and magician Aleister Crowley has been donated to a Shrewsbury charity shop.

    The manager of the Oxfam store, Tom Cotton, says the person who handed it in may have links with Mr Crowley's family.

    Similar books have sold for hundreds of pounds and he is putting it up for sale on an internet auction site today.

    Shropshire's health bosses want to encourage more women to give birth at the county's midwife-led units. 

    There are five in Shropshire - in Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Oswestry, Telford and Shrewsbury - but 85% of women decide to give birth in a consultant-led unit, in line with the national trend.

    Archaeologists are trying to recover artefacts from the site of an old medieval church in Shrewsbury - before it's turned into a car park. 

    They have until 16:00 today to find what they can. Items uncovered so far include a pig in a leather coffin, and a dog buried with six chickens.

    The dig is taking place next to the small Greek Othodox Church in Sutton Farm. The church isn't being knocked down but the field surrounding it will be paved over to create parking spaces for a housing development.
