  2. Teenager hurt after collision with carpublished at 09:16 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2017

    A teenager has been seriously injured after being hit by a car in Shawbury, the ambulance service say. 

    The 16-year-old was walking along Mytton Lane at about 15:55 yesterday when the collision happened.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service said he ended up on the pavement after the collision. 

    He was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with a head injury and a "badly broken leg".

    One of the stars of last year's Wimbledon Tennis Championships is due to play in Shrewsbury this week. 

    Marcus Willis made headlines last July when he reached round two of Wimbledon by beating a man ranked more than 700 places above him, before losing to Roger Federer.

    He's one of the players taking part in this week's Men's Aegon GB-Pro Series at the Shrewsbury Club - the event runs until Saturday.  

    The tournament has been held in the town for the past few years and previous winners have included Britain's Dan Evans, now ranked in the top 50 in the world.  

  4. Ludlow businesses should appeal rates increase says MPpublished at 08:33 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2017

    The MP for Ludlow, Philip Dunne, says companies hit by large increases in the business rates they pay should appeal. 

    Business leaders in the town say they're worried its unique High Street could be lost after the national recalculation, due to take effect this year, is imposed. 

    Some smaller shops will pay nothing from April, but others, including many independent retailers, are facing large rises.

  10. Drugs and alcohol helpline sees rise in callspublished at 17:53 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2017

    The NSPCC's helpline has seen a rise in the number of people in the West Midlands reporting drug and alcohol use around children over the last three years.

     A total of 950 people from the region contacted the charity last year to describe potential substance misuse amongst adults when children and young people were in their care or nearby. 

     The charity says substance misuse is a significant risk for children and often leads to neglect and abuse.

    Detectives in Telford are advising people in the area to do more to protect valuable gold jewellery after two homes were broken into at the weekend. 

    South Asian necklaces, bangles, rings and similar items were taken on Saturday night from a house on Mafeking Road in Hadley. 

    And three men's gold chains were stolen last night from a property on Mount Gilbert in Arleston.

  15. Police deal with 170 cases of children 'sexting'published at 16:26 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2017

    Last year 170 children were investigated by the police in West Mercia and Warwickshire for "sexting" - sending explicit text or photos by social media or text message.

    The youngest child to be reported was just 10 years old.

    Police in Warwickshire dealt with the largest number of cases - 68, while Herefordshire dealt with just 16.

    There were 44 cases in Shropshire and 42 in Worcestershire over the course of the year.

    A new principal has been appointed at Telford College of Arts & Technology. 

    Stephen Davis will preside over the merger of TCAT and the town's main sixth-form, New College.

    Shrewsbury Town midfielder Shaun Whalley has praised manager Paul Hurst for bringing belief and structure to the side, since arriving last autumn.

    Shrewsbury have won four of their seven matches in 2017, drawing two and have moved up to 17th in the League One table.
