  2. Health campaigner calls cuts to operations spending 'barbaric' published at 10:43 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2017

Shropshire health campaigner Joyce Brand has called cuts to spending on some operations "quite barbaric".

The Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is aiming to save nearly £18m from its 2017-8 budget and is going to change the guidelines which set out when surgery is necessary, to reduce what it sees as "unnecessary surgery".

The CCG's accountable officer, Simon Freeman, said the cuts can be made without big changes to services and that people who need surgery will still get it.

But Mrs Brand said the cutbacks would force people to put up with "really painful conditions".

    Quote Message

The whole question of basing it on allowing people to be in pain and then trying to measure to what degree that pain exists before you come up with surgery seems to me really quite barbaric."

The owner of two blocks of flats, which had no working fire alarms, put his tenants' lives at risks, a court heard.

Robert Reilly, 66, of Much Wenlock in Shropshire, admitted four fire regulation breaches and was sentenced to four months, suspended for two years, and ordered to pay costs of £3,000 at Derby Crown Court yesterday,  according to the fire service., external

Area manager, Alex Johnson, said: “If a fire had broken out in any of the flats, due to the lack of a functioning alarm system, no alarm would have been raised.

"Anyone discovering the fire would only have been able to raise the alarm by knocking on doors or pressing doorbells to rouse residents, by that time, any fire could have developed to prevent their escape down the only staircase."
