    Cloud will thicken this evening, though southern parts of the region will see late sunny spells. 

    During the night the cloud will spread southwards and become thick enough for a little light rain with lows of 6C (43F).

  4. Police call centre worker sacked over child porn offencespublished at 17:48 British Summer Time 19 April 2017

    A man who worked at West Mercia Police's headquarters has been sacked after being found guilty of three counts of possessing indecent images of children.

    John Frankland, 60, from Oswestry worked in the operations and communications centre at Hindlip and was given a suspended six month prison sentence by Telford magistrates last Monday.

    The force said his offences were not committed while he was at work and that he had been dismissed after a misconduct hearing.

    Joe Riley hopes to be available again for Shrewsbury Town this weekend.

    The full-back fractured his wrist in training and missed Monday's game at Northampton, but the club are looking to fit him with a cast that will satisfy Football League rules and allow him to play.

    A researcher at Harper Adams University is carrying out experiments to see if a wax from cauliflower leaves could help farmers grow peanuts in harsh conditions.

    The university has already had success using the wax to help wheat and oil seed rape to grow in dry weather, by improving their water retention and Kelly Racette has come over from Virginia in the USA to see if it can be applied to peanuts too.

    She is one of two students from the University of Florida carrying out the experiments on peanuts and she hopes to carry out full-scale field trials in Shropshire next year.

  8. Football: Transfer plans on hold until relegation battle settledpublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 19 April 2017

    The Shrewsbury Town manager Paul Hurst says the uncertainty over their League One future could make transfer discussions difficult.

    He said some players won't be keen on joining his side if they are relegated and that meant there was a "waiting game" until they know which division they'll be in next season.

    Hurst said he isn't worried by this uncertainty though, having experienced similar uncertainty when his Grimsby Town team was involved in the end-of-season play-offs.

  9. Tree house among attractions at Tudor mansionpublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 19 April 2017

    A 17th Century tree house, which Queen Victoria stayed in, is one of the most eye-catching features at Pitchford Hall and the owners believe it has a claim to be the oldest in the world.

    It is first mentioned in records from 1692 and James and Rowena Mason believe it could date back as far as the 1650s.

    The treehouse sits in a large leaved lime tree and is built in the same style as the nearby hall, which is undergoing repair work.

    An appeal's being made by the police for witnesses after a woman was killed in a crash on the Shifnal to Wolverhampton road.

    The 27-year-old was a passenger in a Vauxhall Corsa that hit a bridge and came to rest in a brook near Bonningale, late on Sunday night. 

    A 22-year-old man who was driving the car suffered chest injuries and was taken to hospital in Birmingham.

    Shrewsbury Town won't be benefiting from Brighton's promotion to the Premier League, despite a promotion clause in the Connor Goldson transfer deal.

    The deal, which took the defender to the south coast, entitled Shrewsbury to more money if Brighton went up from the Championship, but he hasn't played enough games to activate the clause.

    Goldson has missed time with a heart problem, but there are other clauses in the deal which could still benefit Shrewsbury, further down the line.

  12. Tudor mansion owners hope to open to visitors by Christmaspublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 19 April 2017

    The owners of Pitchford Hall say they want it to be repaired and open as a tourist attraction by Christmas. 

    Rowena Mason's family had lived there for five centuries, but were forced to sell it in 1992 - now she has bought it back with her husband James.

    The previous owner never moved in and after lying empty for a quarter of a century, the Tudor mansion near Acton Burnell fell into disrepair.

    Morris Property has been awarded a £4m contract to build a huge new factory , externalon an expanding industrial estate in Telford.

    A fundraising appeal has been launched by the Telford Steam Railway, to repair damage done by vandals last week.

    It says more than £5,000 will be needed to replace the smashed windows and they weren't insured, because the cost of covering their locomotives and carriages was too high.

    The charity, which is run by volunteers, said it decided to set up the Crowdfunding page, external after getting enquiries from visitors.

    It is offering rewards to people who pledge over £20.

  15. Football: Sponsor search delays new kit launchpublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 19 April 2017

    Shrewsbury Town are still working to find a new stadium and shirt sponsor for next season and that will probably mean a delay to the launch of the new kit.

    The club had hoped to sell the replica shirts, with the new sponsor, in the club shop this weekend, for the final home game of the season.

    Shrewsbury's chief executive Brian Caldwell said talks were still ongoing with a number of interested parties and that until they were concluded, the new shirts can't go on sale.

    Here's a look at the design for the statue of Wilfred Owen, which will be erected in Oswestry next year.

    The statue is being commissioned by the community group Lights Out Trefonen and Oswestry Town Council and will stand near the memorial gates to Cae Glass Park (pictured below).

    It will being unveiled during a festival to mark both the death of the war poet and the end of World War One, in November 2018.
