  4. Wrekin MP says snap election strengthens Britainpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 19 April 2017

The decision to call an early election is "in the national interest", according to the MP for the Wrekin, Mark Pritchard.

He said he believed the prime minister had wanted to "stay the course" and hold an election in 2020, but that she reluctantly decided it would strengthen her position during the Brexit process if the election was decided sooner.

    Mark Pritchard

Mr Pritchard will be fighting in his fourth general election and added he thought Theresa May was "right to want her own mandate".

    Quote Message

I think she is right to want to ensure that she has the strongest negotiating hand at the end of the Brexit and during the Brexit process. I think that with the 2020 election timetable overhanging the end of the Brexit negotiations in Brussels that was something that was going to disadvantage her and therefore disadvantage the country."

Shrewsbury Town could be safe from relegation with a game to spare if results go their way this Saturday.

Bury’s 0-0 draw at Bolton last night means Town will secure their League One status if they beat promotion-chasing Southend at Greenhous Meadow and The Shakers lose at Northampton.

Any other result would mean the relegation battle going to the final game of the season.

    Quote Message

She's got to deliver what those who voted to leave the EU, voted for. To take back control of of our money, laws and borders. She wants a stronger manifesto and I think also very much, in her position, the way she came into the leadership, she'd like to have her own mandate, on her own manifesto.
