More than 2,000 people have signed an online petition, calling on the Shropshire Community Health Trust to accept a £2,500 donation from fund-raisers who dressed up in drag to support Ludlow hospital.

The health trust's chief executive turned the money down because she was unhappy with the way the money was raised, saying the costumes were "demeaning" and "insulting" to the nursing profession.

The money had been meant to go towards the costs of a new ECG machine, but the health trust says it will fund the machine itself.

The group of men clad in uniforms and some wearing suspenders collected the money for the Ludlow Community Hospital this summer with a charity bed-push.

The Shropshire Community Health Trust, which runs the hospital, said it has been asking the hospital's league of friends to put a stop to this method of fundraising, but that the "request has not been heeded".

It also reassured patients that it would still be able to afford the ECG machine which the money had been earmarked for.

    Quote Message

Our male and female nurses are highly skilled professionals, and this negative imagery reinforces old-fashioned stereotypes, demeaning the profession and inhibiting recruitment."

Changes to the grading system for GCSEs have been criticised by the head of the Marches School in Oswestry, who says they will be difficult for parents and employers to understand.

The new papers are graded one-to-nine this year, instead of the old alphabetic system, making it hard to compare results with those in previous years.

Executive head teacher Sarah Longville also said it would take schools some time to get used to the new system.

    Quote Message

I think reform was needed in the inflation of grades, but I don't think we needed the extent that grades have been reformed."

The engineers working on the project had to rely on old photographs to remake items such as the bumpers and chrome work.

    Quote Message

Some of the original parts were impossible to find so we had to remake items such as the bumpers and chrome work by hand from photographs. We had to scan the front and rear end of the car and make mock ups of the lights, which were then scanned and 3D printed."
