    Two Shropshire sailors are taking part in the Clipper Round the World Race, which started in Liverpool yesterday.

    Bob Beggs from Telford (pictured below, centre) is captaining one of 12 identical 70ft yachts involved and he skippered the winning boat in the year 2000.

    The competition was set up by Sir Robin Knox-Johnson over 20 years ago with the aim of introducing non-sailors to long-distance racing.

    Kate Sumner, who lives near Shrewsbury, is the other Shropshire competitior.

    She will board the Unicef boat for two legs, later in the race.

  2. More information about woman found dead in Wroxeter crashpublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 21 August 2017

    The police have released more information about a single-vehicle crash near the Wroxeter Roman ruins this morning.

    They say the woman found dead inside a black three-door Fiat Punto was 28 years old and that while the incident was reported to the police at 05:07, it is believed the vehicle had been there for some time.

  3. Hover board catches light in Newport kitchenpublished at 15:06 British Summer Time 21 August 2017

    A hover board caught fire at a house in Newport last night and two people had to be given oxygen by the fire service.

    They were called to Broomfield Road at 21:12 and found a charger attached to the board had exploded in the kitchen of the property.

    In the draw for the first qualifying round of the FA Cup, Haughmond FC have been given a big home tie against Matlock Town from the Northern Premier League.

    The Shropshire side have had to battle through two preliminary rounds to get there and will play the tie a week on Saturday,

    Market Drayton Town will play Alvechurch if they can first win tomorrow's home replay with Sporting Khalsa.

    Thieves have taken "a large amount of cash" from a Co-op store in Ludlow.

    Police say they broke into the shop at the Foldgate Lane petrol station somewhere between 23:00 on Saturday and 03:45 on Sunday and forced their way into a cash machine inside.

    Local councillor Andy Boddington said the petrol station was cordoned off for more than eight hours, while detectives carried out their enquiries.

    The music journalist and punk musician John Robb has praised the organisers of the V Festival, for putting on a "very successful" event.

    He said it was "very much a mainstream pop festival" and said he had to laugh at the "soap stars you've never heard of" who are given backstage passes.

    But he went on to say "it's not easy putting a really good festival on and it's a pretty spectacular affair" and that the V Festival team "make it work".

    The Shrewsbury Town manager Paul Hurst says his current squad is "a long way ahead" of the group of players that escaped relegation last season.

    Shrewsbury are one of four teams to make a perfect start to the League One season and they travel to fellow high-flyers Oxford United next Saturday.

    A new logo has been produced for two Telford colleges which are expected to officially merge next month.

    Telford College of Arts and Technology and New College Telford will become known as Telford College if the arrangement is approved by the government in the coming weeks.

    The principal and chief executive of Telford College, Graham Guest, said the design was "modern, powerful, simple, and reflected our confident, professional and dynamic organisation".

    The existing TCAT and New College Telford campuses will continue to operate during the coming academic year, before all students are brought together on the current TCAT site from September 2018.

    People in Church Stretton are being asked what they want , externalfrom their local library.

    Shropshire Council is looking to put the service out to tender, but says it wants to know what their priorities are, so it can select the right provider.

    The authority's plans to move the library to another site were shelved in spring 2016, after a legal challenge by local residents.

    It responded by asking community groups to run the library instead and received two expressions of interest last autumn, which are now being considered.

    Charlotte Greenway's success is music to the ears of hardcore stone skimmers who are keen to make the sport more inclusive.

    "During the last nine years, we have rarely seen women stone skimmers come to the fore and shine," Julius Barratt, one of the organisers of the All England event, told The Guardian, external.

    The paper said Greenway had encountered a fair share of sexism on her way to success, with the organiser of another event telling her she didn't "throw like a girl".

    She held the lead in the Lake District yesterday, until it was snatched from her with eight minutes to go.

    Her father, Simon Greenway, said she's now being offered coaching by a former champion.

    Staffordshire Police says they've found a lot more drugs at this year's V Festival, external because they stepped up their security.

    With the UK terrorism threat level currently at severe,, external the force said they searched every festival-goer visiting the Weston Park event.

    They say that led to them finding more drugs and a total of 41 arrests, nearly double the figure from last year.

    Telford's ice rink has held its first "skate and paint" session at the weekend, offering artists of all ages the chance to decorate the ice.

    They were given water-based paints and a poncho to protect their clothing and told to be creative.

    The ice has now been cleaned. The ice rink management say they hope it will encourage more young people to take an interest in skating.

    The fire service says it was called to Brindleyford on Brookside just after midnight and that the fire appears to have been started deliberately.

    A team of volunteers has arrived at Weston Park to begin the clean-up after the V Festival.

    They're collecting abandoned tents and sleeping bags, which are then given to aid charities for use overseas.

    Last year, the Ironbridge and Severn Gorge Lions collected over useable 4,000 tents and the ones they couldn't use were sent to landfill.

    Shropshire Revolution had a comfortable 60-8 quarter-final win over Morcambe Bay Storm yesterday, setting up a home semi-final against Gateshead Senators.

    They were 47-0 up in the second quarter, so decided to rest their starters for the second half.

    The semi-final will be played at Oakengates next Sunday, with the Brit Bowl final scheduled for 10 September in Leeds.

    Shrewsbury's impressive start to the season continued as they beat Rochdale to make it three wins out of three in League One at the weekend.

    Despite starting brightly, Shrewsbury went behind to a 17th minute penalty confidently converted by Steve Davies after Toto Nsiala upended Bradden Inman.
