    An old clay tobacco pipe factory, a limeworks and a sewage pumping station are among the venues in Shropshire throwing open their doors this weekend to the public.

    A man has pleaded guilty to causing the death by dangerous driving of an 11-year-old girl in Shrewsbury.

    Roger Goodall, 77, from The Mount was driving a car which hit Olivia Reeves on Mytton Oak Road on 15 June.

  5. £50k sweetener for parking switchpublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    Wellington and Newport town councils have already paid for their own parking enforcement officers and West Mercia PCC John Campion hopes the borough council will follow suit.

    As something of a sweetener, he's offering Telford and Wrekin Council £50,000 in the first year to employ staff and up to a similar amount in years two and three if there's a shortfall in what officers cost and what they bring in in fines.

  6. Muxton Primary celebrates 'Good' ratingpublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    A second report has been released today by Ofsted about a Shropshire school - and it's more good news.

    Muxton Primary, external has been praised by inspectors for its good results and a "caring, nurturing environment in which pupils can thrive".

    The school was again rated "good" in today's official report, external, following a visit by inspectors in July.

    There was also praise for the quality of teaching and pupils' "high levels of engagement", as well as a strong team atmosphere in the staff room.

    Inspectors also called on the school to do more to support disadvantaged pupils and those who have special educational needs and disabilities.

    Earlier this year, secret letters were discovered which has been written to a soldier stationed in Oswestry.

    Now, people are being inspired to write their own - I'll have more from 13:30 on BBC One.

  8. School praised for quality of teaching and leadershippublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    A primary school in Shrewsbury has been praised by inspectors who said teachers had proved "strong role models" and helped develop pupils' independence.

    Belvidere Primary School, external has retained its "good" rating, following a visit by Ofsted inspectors in July.

    In its report, released today, external, the watchdog said recent appointments had "further strengthened leadership and the quality of teaching".

    There was also praise for the "caring community" and pupils' attitude and behaviour.

    The addition of a nursery had also "accelerated progress", the report said.

  9. American Football: Revolution prepare for Brit Bowl finalpublished at 11:48 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    Shropshire Revolution play in their first ever Brit Bowl final this weekend.

    The Oakengates-based team has won every one of its games in the NFC North 2 this season and the Division Two final will be played against the Glasgow Tigers in Leeds.

    The Revolution are favourites to win the game against the third-seeds and are hoping for a good number of supporters to join them at the John Charles stadium on Sunday.

    The winners of the game will gain promotion to Division One, but the losers are almost certain to join them.

    Telford and Wrekin Council is one of only a handful of local authorities not to take on parking enforcement.

    Parking offences were decriminalised in the 1990s and since then responsibility has moved from the police to local councils.

    In most areas, parking fines more than pay for the cost of employing enforcement officers.

    However, in Telford, especially in the town centre, car parks are by-and-large owned by private firms.

    That leaves on-street parking in market towns that are keen not to put off would-be shoppers.

    West Mercia's police commissioner is offering to pay part of the cost of employing council traffic wardens in Telford.

    The borough is one of few in the country where the council hasn't yet taken over responsibility.

    There are no council-operated car parks in the area and the council leader Shaun Davies fears the authority would lose money unless it aggressively pursued minor offences.

  13. Ludlow food festival openspublished at 09:52 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    The Ludlow Food Festival opens its gates this morning, with up to 18,000 people expected over the course of the three-day event.

    This year they are doing away with the large marquee inside the castle and replacing it with three smaller ones, but the line-up will be similar, with demonstrations, tasting-tours and more than 160 exhibitors selling their products.

    The festival started in 1995, with the aim of promoting local produce and businesses and claims to be the UK's "first food festival".

    Thousands of people take part in its sausage and ale trails around the town every year.

    Shrewsbury Town play their 3,000th football league match this weekend and could finish it on top of the League One table.

  15. School places fear over barracks developmentpublished at 08:38 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    Claims that Shrewsbury won't have enough school places once 250 homes are built on the Copthorne Barracks site have been denied by Shropshire Council.

    The leader of the Lib Dem group on the authority, Councillor Roger Evans, says the authority is failing to plan for the extra school places needed and that children in some parts of the town might struggle to get into their first choice school as a result.

    The Conservative-run authority has denied it is failing to plan for the extra housing and said it is continuing to monitor the situation.
