The North Shropshire MP is welcoming suggestions the government is planning tight restrictions on immigrants from the European Union after Brexit.
Owen Paterson, who has been a prominent Euro-sceptic, described the proposals as "pretty sensible", despite concerns from some business leaders that it could harm the British economy.
A leaked document recommends a two-year limit for unskilled workers to stay in the UK, with employers being urged to recruit more British staff.
Quote MessageI think this is pretty sensible, it's simply not sustainable, the current rate of immigration. But we have got to keep targeted immigration, so where there are skill shortages we bring people in."

The Shrewsbury Town manager Paul Hurst says loanee Dan James was sent back to Swansea for footballing reasons and said suggestions the pair had fallen out were "silly rumours".
The 19-year-old winger joined on a season-long loan deal in June, but failed to get on the pitch.
He was an unused sub in the defeat to Nottingham Forest in the League Cup.
Quote MessageThere's a few silly rumours out there. There's certainly no issue in terms of attitude or anything like that. There was no big fall out. It was simply that I didn't feel he was going to get the opportunities and it didn't seem right to me to harm his development if he wasn't going to play any kind of role."

A Telford soldier who joined the army 16 years ago has been given a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
Staff Sergeant Mark Ward is currently serving with the 26th Regiment, Royal Artillery and was presented with the award at a ceremony in Germany.
He has been to Afghanistan twice and was sent on a tour of Iraq when he was just 18-year-old.
Plans to bring Shropshire's fire authority under the control of the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner are being criticised in a report going before Telford councillors next week.
PCC John Campion has said the move could save £4m a year, but the Telford and Wrekin Council report questions whether this is possible and suggests councillors formally oppose the proposal.
The council scrutiny group that prepared the report also says the fire authority is "well respected" and "not failing" and says it finds "no merit in the PCC's proposals".
The plans have already been criticised by the Shropshire fire authority and also by the Hereford and Worcester fire authority, which could also be included in the merger.

Archaeologists carrying out a dig at Oswestry castle say they now believe it was much bigger than originally thought.
They've been carrying out excavations there since 2015, with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and have found what they are calling a "very large Anglo-Norman keep" with large outer defences.
Project manager Roger Cooper said when this three-week dig is complete the team will return next year and in 2019, before writing a full report in 2020.
And he also said the discover "emphasised how important Oswestry was on the March at the time" and that there had been a lot of interest in the site, from people all over the country.
Quote MessageThere's been an assumption in the past that this is a shell keep on top of this mound and in fact our findings are suggesting it's quite different. We've got a very large Anglo-Norman keep with a massive splayed base."

An internet expert believes the street sign in Telford which displayed pornographic images was probably hacked and said: "We need to take cyber security as seriously as we take home security".
The police and Telford and Wrekin Council launched an investigation after the images were discovered in Southwater. Professor Steve Molyneux, who works to improve the use of technology in schools, said if it wasn't the work of hackers, it must have been someone who had access to the system.
Prof Molyneux also said this this was not the first time something like this had happened, referring to a similar incident in Cardiff last month, and said he thought the culprits were probably "pranksters" doing it for fun.
Quote MessageWe need to take cyber security as seriously as we take home security, because we don't go around leaving the front door wide open when we go to work."

The AFC Telford United manager Rob Edwards believes there were "lots of positives" to take from last night's win away to Nuneaton.
He said his players were "professional, very solid, hard working and looked a real threat" and that they "executed the game plan spot on".
Telford have now won four matches away from home, but are yet to pick up a point at the Bucks Head.
The company behind a new burial mound, granted planning permission in Wem, says it's been inundated with interest.
The mound, designed to replicate the sort of buildings used in prehistoric times, will be located at Soulton Hall.
The company behind it, Sacred Stones, say it's for ashes only at this stage.

Three men are back home after being freed from a Swiss jail, 13 weeks after being arrested.
David Bentley from Bridgnorth, Julian Wilson from Nottinghamshire and Adrian Harrold from Wolverhampton, were taking part in a car rally tour when they were arrested over violations of Switzerland's road traffic laws.
The men were handed suspended sentences of between 13 and 14 months, after being accused of reaching speeds of up to 177kph (109mph).
The organiser of the rally said friends and family went out the bring the men and their cars home.
Bit of a mixed bag with the weather today.
In Ludlow (top) it was a misty start to the day, but a few miles along the A49 in Longnor (bottom) the sun was out.
Anthony Dwyer scored twice for AFC Telford United last night.
Dwyer's pair - his second double in three games - earned the Bucks another away win 2-0 at Nuneaton.
He scored the club's 1,000th goal since reforming 13 years ago.

An investigation has been launched after pornography was displayed on a digital sign in Telford town centre.
The screen, which usually shows local information, was photographed in Southwater on Monday showing an adult website instead.
Telford and Wrekin Council said it immediately alerted police and had stopped internet access to its signs.
Quote MessageWe are carrying out a full investigation into this complaint and have referred it to West Mercia Police and the cyber-crime desk."
