  8. Your views: Reaction after meeting over future of Sheffield Librarypublished at 11:44 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2016

People are less angry but more sceptical about plans for the future of Sheffield's Central Library.

That's according to the Cabinet member in charge of libraries Jack Scott following a big public meeting last night about plans to turn it into a five star hotel.

Here's some of what you've had to say on BBC Radio Sheffield's Facebook , externalpage:

And how much will it cost to build a new library? It will be done by cheapest bidder and be knocked down within 10-15 years to build another monstrosity that will go the same way. If the council hadn't let the building get into such a state in the first place it wouldn't need £30 million spending on it now."

    Quote Message

£30 million to get the building up to scratch, are these people going to fund it themselves ? We all slag Sheffield city council of and the state of the city centre but when opportunities come along to move forward everyone complains, Do we want to be compete with Leeds and Manchester or just let the city centre get worse . I for one want a city centre to be proud of and if that means moving the library and allowing investment then I'm all for that

    James Mason

Think yourselves lucky that you've still got a library, Barnsley council knocked ours down and sold the land the year before last.

Hundreds of people turned up to a meeting at Sheffield Town Hall last night to debate the future of the city's Central Library.

Two weeks ago the city council announced plans which could see the building on Tudor Square become a luxury hotel run by a Chinese businessman.

He says he's going to invest billions in the city over the next 60 years and the council have promised there will be a new library - but we still don't know where that might be built.

If you saw the Sheffield Star yesterday you might have seen Michael Palin speak out against the plans., external..
