UKIP leader Paul Nuttall has admitted that past claims that he lost "close personal friends" in the Hillsborough disaster were incorrect.
He told Liverpool's Radio City he was not responsible for statements on his website in 2011 and 2012 claiming this.
He told the station it was "someone he knew" who had died in the 1989 tragedy.
The MEP, who is standing in the Stoke Central by-election, said those casting doubt on whether he was at Hillsborough that day were "cruel and nasty".

This is a picture of an otter, you've probably seen one before but keep reading because this could be a very rare otter:
The otter was spotted in the River Aire in Leeds city centre this afternoon.
Now I'm no wildlife expert, but I have a feeling this might be a very rare sighting. The man who sent it in, James Willson, says that he's not seen one in the Aire since 2006!
I've called Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to find out a bit more about their appearances in the city, I'll let you know what they say.
Do you know this man? Police want to speak to him after a four-year-old boy was approached in a park in Halifax.
The incident happened on 1 February in Crow Wood Park.
A woman had taken her boy to the park to play and as she was getting something from her handbag, a man approached the boy and tried to lead him away.
Luckily the woman looked up at the right time and shouted at the man and he ran away.
Quote MessageClearly this incident has caused great distress to the child's mother and to the young boy who was thankfully unhurt."
Det Const James Taylor, West Yorkshire Police

Sheffield United supporters could have the chance to live at the club's ground, if plans for a new development at Bramall Lane go ahead.
At the moment the space it would occupy, the Cherry Street / Shoreham Street Corner is used as car parking.
The plans, which have been unveiled today, would also bring a new club shop and other retail outlets.
Quote MessageThe corner site we are developing could fulfil a dream for some of our supporters."

People are deliberately ignoring rules to stop the spread of bird flu and putting millions of chickens and turkeys at risk in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
That's according to farmers, who want any evidence that birds are being allowed to roam outdoors to be handed to the authorities.
Already thousands of birds have died after three outbreaks in the last few weeks.

Thieves stole money from a 95-year-old woman in Sheffield by claiming she needed work doing in her garden.
The theft happened yesterday morning on Daisy Walk in Beighton when the woman answered the door to a man who claimed that some cables needed to be laid in her back garden.
They then both went into her garden, police think the man left her front door ajar. He then kept her talking and then suddenly left.
When the woman went back to her house she discovered a quantity of cash missing.
The man is described as white, in his 30s, about 5ft 7ins tall and of medium build.
Quote MessageMost people who come to your door are genuine, however it’s unfortunate that some do come with the intention of tricking their way into your home to steal from you."
