    A cousin of Karen Matthews says she'll only speak to her relative again when she's ready to tell the "full truth" about what happened to daughter Shannon.

    The hoax kidnap of the then-nine-year-old girl saw Shannon, from Dewsbury, drugged and hidden by mum Karen and her stepfather's uncle in 2008.

    Both kidnappers planned to "find" Shannon and split the £50,000 reward on offer. They were later arrested and jailed. 

    Susan Howgate hasn't spoken to Karen Matthews since.

    Susan, who lives near Dewsbury Moor, will be among millions watching tonight as BBC One shows the second episode of The Moorside, a dramatisation of those events nine years ago:

    There's condemnation of the Government for refusing to help cover the cost of the tidal surge which hit Scarborough and Whitby last month. 

    The final bill is expected to be almost £250,000.

    Wakefield band The Cribs are to be honoured by their home city with a special exhibition which opens tomorrow.

    Some of the band's instruments and other items charting their history will be on display in the atrium of Wakefield One. 

    The Cribs - the Jarman brothers, twins Ryan on guitar and Gary on bass and younger brother Ross on drums - have been around since 2002, recording six albums and playing countless gigs. 

    And we mustn't forget that legendary former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr joined the band for four years.

    York City Knights completed their pre-season programme with a 34-24 win over a young Hull FC XIII at Bootham Crescent last night.

    The new-look side now have just five days before their first match of the season against North Wales in the League One Cup on Sunday.

    Plans to strengthen a bridge in North Yorkshire have been changed after people living nearby expressed concerns.

    The work on Cawood Bridge, near Selby, is expected to cost about £1m and involves installing steel plates and painting it. 

    However, it does mean the crossing will be closed for 20 weeks while the work is done. 

    Originally, it was going to happen early this year. But after suggestions from residents it'll take place in the summer while some commuters are on holiday and schools are closed.

    A fresh appeal for witnesses after a woman was hit and killed by a car on Leeds' outer ring road has been made by police.

    Rachel Watson, 43, was out running on the A6120 near Tongue Lane when she was hit by a grey Vauxhall Corsa, on Saturday 4 February.

    The driver stopped and spoke to officers, but police say they're trying to trace the driver of a beige van which may have witnessed what happened.

    They're also looking for a learner driver who was having a lesson at the time, as the incident may be caught on the car's camera.

    Meanwhile, Rachel Watson's family has issued a statement in tribute:

    What's it like to live in a home that could be damaging your health? 

    Research by BBC Radio Leeds has found that thousands of council house tenants are living in squalor. 

    In the last five years, Leeds City Council has paid out £4.5m compensation for homes that aren't up to scratch

    During that time, there have been almost 1,500 disrepair claims brought against the local authority - the highest number of any council outside London.

  8. Man arrested in Rotherham after armed stand-offpublished at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2017

    A man's been arrested after an armed stand-off in Rotherham last night.

    Officers were called to a property on Spalton Road, Parkgate, at about 19:00 on Monday after reports a woman had been injured and was being held against her will.

    Police negotiators were called in and the 42-year-old woman left the property at about 20:30 with injuries to her hands.

    A 42-year-old man was arrested about half-an-hour later on suspicion of assault and false imprisonment and remains in police custody.

    There's relief for a small coastal community near Filey this afternoon.

    Residents of Flat Cliffs have been told their only access road will be protected from erosion at a cost of £0.5m.

    Scarborough Borough Council has agreed to a government grant to cover the costs.

    Tickets for Huddersfield Town's FA Cup fifth round match went on general sale this morning.

    The Terriers are at home to Manchester City on Saturday, with kick-off at 15:00.

    I've spoken to the club, and they say that tickets are still available, but you can't imagine there'll be many left for long.

    If you are thinking of buying some, be warned: you must have bought a ticket for a Huddersfield game in the past otherwise you won't get one.

    Councillors could give the go-ahead for a specialist company to remove herring gull nests and eggs in Scarborough's South Bay and Whitby harbour from next month.

    They would also use birds of prey to scare the gulls.  

    It would be part of a crack down on what are described as seagull-muggings in the two resorts

    Similar action has already been taken by councils in Plymouth and Bath.

    A 16-year-old boy has appeared at Leeds Youth Court charged with murder of Irfan Wahid last Friday and possession of a bladed article.

    Tornado has delighted the 500 passengers on its first service from Cumbria to North Yorkshire, with the locomotive now heading back to Appleby.

  20. 'Stop Trump state visit' petition rejectedpublished at 11:17 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2017

    The government has rejected a petition started by a solicitor in Leeds calling for Donald Trump's state visit invitation to be withdrawn

    The petition will still be debated by the House of Commons on 20 February but it means the government has no plans to stop the visit.

    It said it recognised the "strong views" expressed but looked forward to welcoming the US President once details have been arranged.  

    A counter-petition calling for the visit to go ahead attracted more than 309,000 signatures and thiswill be debated on the same day.
