    A centre for recovering drug addicts and alcoholics in Newcastle-under-Lyme will close in a few weeks due to funding shortfall. 

    Managers at BAC O'Connor says it has lost half of its funding from Staffordshire County Council's Better Care Fund.

    People who have been treated at the centre have told BBC Radio Stoke they "owe their lives to the centre" and can't believe it may shut. 

    More than 30,000 people have signed a petition, external opposing the cuts to drugs and alcohol services in Staffordshire.

    The county council says it was left with £15m less in its own budget and had no choice but to review the funding.

    The Stoke City manager Mark Hughes says Wilfried Bony scoring goals for them was "written in the stars" after their 3-1 win over Swansea.

    The former Swans striker scored his first goal for the Potters before Wayne Routledge headed the visitors level in a frenetic first half in which the hosts hit the post three times.

    The volume of Stoke chances eventually told as visiting defender Alfie Mawson turned Ramadan Sobhi's shot into his own net, and Bony then nodded in a third after Joe Allen's shot was saved. 

    Mark Hughes' side are now 12th in the table after a fifth match unbeaten in the league.

    Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has pledged to visit the Royal Stoke University Hospital's A&E unit to see the situation for himself.

    He was responding to concerns from local MP Tristram Hunt in parliament today about emergency provision in the area. 

    Mr Hunt said he had concerns "for some time" about the situation at the Royal Stoke and neighbouring trusts.

  16. Sunday third busiest day of year for 999 callspublished at 17:46 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2016

    Sunday was the third busiest day of the year for 999 calls, according to West Midlands Ambulance Service, external.

    In total, the Trust received 3,591 emergency calls across the region, compared with 3,154 the weekend before.

    Managers blamed a combination of Halloween, Diwali, a payday weekend and an extra hour, due to the clocks going back.

    They praised staff who "worked incredibly hard to ensure patients continued to receive excellent care".

    Only New Year's Day and 19 July, when temperatures soared, were busier.

    The search is continuing for a burglar who stole the rings from a pensioner's fingers, external in Trentham. 

    It happened just a week ago in the 98-year-old victim's own home. 

    She's been left with bruising and her family say it's affected her appetite.
