    Port Vale legend Phil Sproson has told BBC Radio Stoke that he feels the arrival at the club of Chris Eagles on a short term contract and Callum Guy on loan from Derby will shake up the rest of the squad.

    Caretaker Vale manager Michael Brown says he is looking to make further additions to his playing staff this month and sees a striker as a priority.

    A 46-year-old man has died following a house fire in Congleton last week. 

    Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service say they rescued Lee Shallcross from the end terrace on Belgrave Avenue last Monday afternoon., external

    He'd suffered serious burns, and Cheshire Police say he passed away in hospital two days later. 

    They say his death isn't being treated as suspicious.

    The 72-year-old was well respected in the game and his death from a suspected heart attack has come as a shock.

    An elderly woman is still in a serious condition in hospital say police, external, after she was hit by a car in Tamworth.

    Staffordshire Police say the 78-year-old was on Roman Court at the junction with Watling Street in Tuesday afternoon when the collision with an Audi TT happened.

    They say she's being treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and they want to hear from witnesses who saw the crash.

    The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says the prime minister should intervene straight away to deal with pressures at Stoke-on-Trent's main A&E and other hospitals in the Midlands.

    Latest figures show more than 14,000 patients, external went through the emergency unit at the Royal Stoke University Hospital during November.

    Nearly a third of them were not seen within the government's four-hour A&E target.

    The Labour leader has told the BBC that he believes pressure on the health service can be traced back to a number of issues, including the closure of community hospital beds. 

    Yesterday, Prime Minister Theresa May said there was always greater pressure during the winter, with the UK's ageing population and "growing complex needs" creating extra strain.

    The government said it had given the NHS what it needed for the next five years, to meet its own funding plan.

    A man's been jailed after , externalcausing a crash which police say saw his lorry plough into the back of a people carrier on the M6 in Staffordshire, killing a 70-year-old disabled woman. 

    Philip Moore, 56, from Cook Road, Rochdale had previously pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

    Staffordshire Police say he was driving his lorry on the M6 near Stoke-on-Trent in June 2015 when it went on to the hard shoulder, hitting the back of a VW Sharon that had broken down. 

    The force says the driver of the VW was out of the vehicle but his disabled partner, Brenda Howe from Cheltenham, was still inside and was thrown from the vehicle, being pronounced dead at the scene.

    Moore was today jailed for three-and-a-half-years and disqualified from driving for four-and-a-half-years.

    A Christmas lights display on a house in Crewe has made more than £22,500 for charity this year. 

    Organiser Graham Witter says he fundraises for the Donna Louise Children's Hospice because his late, disabled sister Jessica used to get respite care there.

    He says he's always decorated the house at Christmas because she "loved colours, lights and sound". 

    Over the past three years they've raised £17,000 but this year Graham says they've raised a, external "staggering £22,680" for the hospice.

    The competition to become UK City of Culture 2021 is officially under way today, external, with Stoke-on-Trent among the places hoping to get the title.

    Today's launch by the government of the competition comes in the same month as Hull kicked off its year as UK City of Culture 2017.

    The city's bidding team have until the end of February to officially register their interest, then until the end of April to submit the bid.
