    Stoke-on-Trent City Council says it's put down 210 tonnes of grit overnight, external.

    The authority says crews used that amount within 16 hours in its first shift and will keep gritting today. 

    Meanwhile Staffordshire County Council says it's had 22 tractor ploughs out clearing roads.

    The gritting team in Stoke-on-Trent says 210 tonnes of salt has been used over 16 hours on the roads across the area.

    Gritting routes in east Cheshire have been treated this morning, the council says.

    The A537 Cat and Fiddle road is shut between the Bull-Hill Lane junction, Macclesfield, and the A54, in Buxton, due to the icy conditions.

    The same is true for the A54 between the Bosley crossroads and Buxton.

    There are more than 50 schools closed in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire this morning because of the severe weather.

    Snow's continuing to fall this morning across Stoke-on-Trent and the city council website lists 26 schools as shut as of 08:00., external

    Staffordshire County Council says it has 37 closures as of 08:16.

    Some of the schools described their sites as "dangerous" on site, with surrounding roads affected by heavy snow.
