    A farmer says he's relieved he'll be able to sell his chicken eggs as free-range after the government announced relaxations to bird flu restrictions.

    The H5N8 strain has been found in about 40 wild birds in England, Scotland and Wales after circulating in Europe, external for several months, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs., external

    Since early December poultry farmers have been forced to keep all their chickens inside

    Now, the government's chief vet Prof Nigel Gibbens says they've put together an interactive map showing which parts of the country are at low or high risk. 

    Alan Warrington, who is a free range chicken farmer in the Eccleshall area, in Staffordshire,  says he's in a low risk area so will be able to keep his free-range status.

    Brothers Fawad and Jawad and their cousin Ahmad were fostered seven years ago by Jackie and Bob Meredith in Tixall, Staffordshire and now have permission to stay in the country. 

    The men told BBC Breakfast today that their journey to the UK had lasted six months and was perilous and "unreal". 

    Jackie Meredith also said they were frightened and terrified when they arrived and that they'd had to cope with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder with each of the cousins since then but they'd now "flourished".

    Two men tricked an 80-year-old woman and stolen more than £3,000 from her house by posing as fence repairers, external, police say.

    Officers say they knocked at the victim's door on Oakdene Avenue, Burntwood on Wednesday morning.

    One of them looked at the fence and made her an offer to repair it, watching her go to a cupboard to collect cash. 

    They say he then asked her to open a door and stole £3,100 before the pair left.

    Strike action has been threatened by a union if the closure of the university campus in Crewe leads to compulsory redundancies. 

    This afternoon the board of governors for Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) confirmed they will close the site in summer 2019, blaming falling student numbers and declining finances.

    Ahead of the meeting, the University and College Union said around 400 staff would face an uncertain future if that happened and it was keen to work with the university to avoid compulsory redundancies. 

    It said that, following a vote by its members, it would ballot for strike action if staff were threatened with compulsory redundancy as a result of the plans. 

    In a statement, MMU said its aim was to "minimise job losses."

    A car fire in Burton last night is believed to have been caused by something being thrown at the vehicle - which set it alight.

    The car, which was parked on the driveway of a house on Suffolk Road, was left as a burnt-out shell.

    It's being examined by forensic officers and police are appealing for witnesses who were in the area at around 21:00.

  11. No arrests made in rabbit sculpture arson investigationpublished at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2017

    More than a week after a 38ft (11.6m) high straw Peter Rabbit sculpture burnt to the ground in an arson attack, external, police say they've yet to make any arrests.

    The blaze at Snugbury's factory in Hurleston, Nantwich on 2 February saw the sculpture reduced to a metal mesh shell.

    Cheshire Police say they've not made any arrests in their investigation and they are still appealing for information. 

    A crowdfunding page, set up to raise £1,200 to help restore and rebuild the sculpture has reached 98% of its target.

    Crewe's university campus is going to close, it's been confirmed this afternoon.

    The board of governors at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) met today to make a final decision on its future.

    They have announced they will be withdrawing from the site and that it will close in the summer of 2019. 

    MMU says it follows a 45% drop in student numbers at the Crewe campus in the past five years and a decline in the financial position of the site.

    The university's Vice-Chancellor Professor Malcolm Press says they will try to minimise job losses and are committed to delivering courses to students who are already enrolled.

    There's a chance people in Staffordshire could see snow this weekend as temperatures stay around freezing into next week.

    The county council say they've had a cold weather alert from the Met Office with icy conditions lasting for the next few days.

    An arson-hit plastic recycling centre in Stoke-on-Trent has got to be pulled down so the fire can be fully put out.

    Hanbury Plastics in Milton has been alight since Sunday morning and smoke from it could be seen for miles.

    The city council says they are working with the owners and the fire service to finally stop the blaze burning.  

    Yesterday the fire service said they'd concluded it was started deliberately.

    Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service says it was called to the site between Tipkinder Park and Queens Park Drive last night. 

    They say they believe the fire was started deliberately.

  17. Watch: Foster parents call for UK to help more child migrantspublished at 15:40 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2017

    A couple from Staffordshire who fostered three youngsters from Afghanistan when they came to the UK seven years ago say Britain should be helping as many child refugees as possible. 

    Their comments follow the government on Wednesday ending a scheme requiring the Home Office to allow some of the most vulnerable unaccompanied children stranded in Europe into the UK. 

    Ministers argue the arrangement is "a pull" for children and traffickers.

    Foster parents Jackie and Bob Meredith took brothers Fawad and Jawad and their cousin Ahmad to their home in Tixall after they survived a perilous six-month journey in 2008. 

    The cousins now have leave to remain in the UK and Mr Meredith told the BBC: "We should be helping as many of these young people as we can."

    An investigation's been launched into Staffordshire Police after a Stoke-on-Trent man, external complained he's been stopped in his vehicle and searched 17 times last year.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) says Adeel Rehman from Normacot claims they were for no legal reason and alleges they amount to "harassment and racial discrimination".

    Nothing was found and no subsequent action was taken by police, the IPCC said.

    The IPCC says he also complained in one case that police officers used "excessive force". 

    The watchdog says they're going to look at all the allegations.

    Staffordshire Police say they made a voluntary referral to the IPCC, adding that they welcome it and "will co-operate fully".
