  14. Hospital A&E figures: Royal Stoke misses target by bigger percentagepublished at 16:50 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2017

    Allen Cook
    BBC Local Live

We reported earlier about how the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) had continued to miss the government's A&E targets in the latest figures, external.

The statistics from NHS England for the trust showed just 73.4% of patients in December were dealt with in four hours, putting it among the worst performing trusts in England - the target from ministers is 95%.

The figure for the UHNM covers the two A&E units it runs, in Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford, and the minor injury units.

Ambulances outside the Royal Stoke University Hospital

But, given the issues at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, with patients urged over winter to use alternatives to A&E, external, we dug into the figures for its accident and emergency unit alone.

They show that in December 2016, 14,278 people attended the Royal Stoke's A&E with 5,110 taking longer than four hours to be dealt with - meaning just 64.2% were seen within the target.

Compare that with December 2015 when 11,190 went to the same A&E - 3,132 took longer than four hours to be admitted, discharged or transferred, giving a 72.0% figure.
