    Staffordshire's Adam Peaty, along with team mates Freya Anderson, James Guy and Georgia Davis, won gold at the European Swimming Championships.

    They beat rivals to win the mixed 4x100m medley relay at the games in Glasgow.

    Seventeen-year-old Anderson, from Ellesmere College, Shropshire, held off her male rivals as the team broke the European record.

    Earlier in the competition Peaty, from Uttoxeter, broke his own 100m breaststroke world record to retain his European title.

    The funeral will take place today of a campaigner who fought to have the breast cancer drug, Herceptin, to be made widely available on the NHS.

    Lynne Burton, from Clayton, Staffordshire died last week at the age of 68.

    She was part of the Women Fighting for Herceptin group which challenged the Government in 2005.

    What could be the remains of a medieval road, created by the Knights Templar, has been discovered by scientists at Keele University.

    The recent heatwave has exposed the long-hidden foundations on land near Keele village in Staffordshire and students have been using a drone to try and map out the parch marks and look for more historical features.

    Keele village was founded as a centre for the Knights Templar, external when the land was given to the order in the 1160s by King Henry II, the university said.

    A Templar chapel is believed to be underneath a church in the village but the location of other buildings from the Templar age are still unknown.

    The Knights Templar were known for their role in the Crusades and as one of the Middle Ages’ most powerful and wealthy religious orders.

    The hot summer's been a boon for archaelogists as outlines of ancient structures have been revealed by patterns in the growth of grass and crops.

    There are fears that plans to turn a narrow road in a town into a one-way street could stop hearses getting out of a main churchyard.

    Staffordshire County Council's proposing making the change on Church Street, Stone, in a bid to improve safety.

    But, at the latest town council meeting, councillor Rob Kenney said if people were leaving the church and wanted to turn right "it is impossible in a Mini; let alone a hearse.”

    The local authority called instead for the one-way system to cover part of Church Street, rather than the whole road.

    Highways officials have no control over what roads are used by construction vehicles building HS2 if there are fewer than 24 journeys a day, a council has admitted.

    Work has already started in Staffordshire to get ready for the first stage of the high-speed rail line, with main civil engineering due to start next year.

    However, at its latest meeting looking at which routes would be used by construction vehicles, the county council's admitted HS2 Ltd doesn't need its consent if it only has 24 or fewer lorries in action in a day.

    But the authority says it's tried to avoid too much disruption by meeting with HS2 Ltd to agree to a series of assurances, such as routing traffic away from the middle of Lichfield.

    Now, it says it wants to make Stoke-on-Trent the first city in the UK to offer free sanitary products in every school.

    The group says many families in the area don't have much money and face tough choices at food banks.

    Motorway police say several drivers were witnessed driving past a serious crash on the M6 today, filming the scene on their mobiles phones.

    Part of the northbound carriageway was closed for a time at Junction 14 in Staffordshire after the four-vehicle crash.

    The Central Motorway Police Group tweeted , externalofficers had "filmed them filming us," and that the drivers will be dealt with accordingly.

    Staffordshire County Council spent £6.1m on repairs and improvements to St Peter's Bridge and Burton Bridge in Burton upon Trent, external, to avoid having to otherwise close one of them permanently.

    St Peter's was revamped last year and, having started on 18 June, the authority says its workers have finished on the second bridge, three weeks early.

    This afternoon, her younger sister Gemma Eastwood visited her house and looked at the dozens of cards and flowers left by other people.

    This morning, 32-year-old Michael Stirling appeared in court charged with the 28-year-old's murder and was remanded in custody.

    The number of patients waiting more than 18 weeks for treatment at two Cheshire hospitals has almost quadrupled in 12 months.

    Mid Cheshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said 1,011 patients at Crewe's Leighton Hospital and Victoria Infirmary in Northwich had suffered the long waits following referrals in June 2018.

    This compared to 271 patients in June 2017.

    The crash happened yesterday afternoon on the B5062 in Newport heading towards Tibberton, police say.

    Officers say they don't yet know why the car mounted the grass verge which caused it to roll over.

    A 52-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 56-year-old man was taken to hospital.
