    The vice-chancellor of the University of Suffolk, external says independence will give them a chance to fight "in an equal way" with the rest of the university sector.

    Speaking on the day of the college's official re-naming, Richard Lister said it won't happen overnight, but it will "stand us in good stead and it will enable us to deliver the things that we've promised, for the whole of this county."

  3. 'Amazing' waterspout off Suffolk coastpublished at 12:43 British Summer Time 1 August 2016

    A waterspout spiralling above the sea in Suffolk provided a stunning sight on Saturday.

    The weather phenomenon, which is similar to a tornado, could be seen swirling at the coast off Thorpeness and Aldeburgh.

    Barrie Hayter was at a wedding reception when he managed capture this video of the event.

    Meteorologist and BBC Look East weather forecaster Dan Holley said: "Essentially a waterspout is just a tornado, but over water.

    "Both begin life as a funnel cloud - a rotating column of air underneath a shower or thunderstorm - which, once it's extended to the ground becomes a tornado if it's on land, or named a waterspout if over water.

    "On Saturday, we had a line of wind convergence where northwesterly winds inland met an easterly sea breeze from the North Sea.

    "Where the two opposing winds meet, the air gets forced upwards to create showers, and with a little spin can occasionally create funnel clouds."

    The University of Suffolk has been officially established, following the announcement in May that the former University Campus Suffolk had been granted independence.

    It can now award its own degrees, seek its own funding and make more of its own decisions about which courses and research it can provide.

  5. Footballers hurt in crash receive £6,000 each after charity matchpublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 1 August 2016

    Two footballers who received serious injuries in a crash in Newmarket on 1 July, each received £6,000  after a charity match at Newmarket Town FC, external's Cricket Field Road ground.

    The home side took on an Ipswich Town veterans team which included ex-England player Kieron Dyer.

    Shaun Whiter (pictured left), an estate agent in Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex, had both his legs amputated. His friend Joey Abbs received serious leg injuries in the crash.

    Chairman of the club John Olive said £10,000 was raised at the match itself, with £2,000 coming from various other donations.

    With their first game of the Championship season just five days away, Ipswich Town, external are closing in on another new arrival, with an announcement expected today BBC Suffolk understands.

    Names in the frame include Belgian trialist Roland Lamah and Crystal Palace's 20-year-old winger Sullay Kaikai (pictured), who's been linked with a loan move to Portman Road.

    So far this summer, the Blues have signed Adam Webster from Portsmouth and turned fellow defender Paul Digby's loan spell into a permanent deal.

    Ipswich Town, external boss Mick McCarthy says trialist winger Roland Lamah (pictured right) is "one of a few players we're considering" as he looks to add to his squad.

    McCarthy spoke to BBC Suffolk Sport after Saturday's disappointing 2-1 defeat to Royal Union Saint-Gilloise.

    "I thought he really did well today, he contributed. Hopefully we'll have somebody in before Saturday," he said.

    Town start their Championship campaign at home to Barnsley.

    Captain Dan Halsey (pictured) was the Suffolk side's top scorer, with a paid 16, while Connor Coles weighed in with 9+1.

    “There is no doubt in my mind we should have claimed something from today," said chairman Kevin Jolly.  

    "We were not sharp enough out of the gate especially in the early part of the meeting and as a result were always chasing Eastbourne."

    Jackie Butler, who lives in Leiston, was one of those who saw the waterspout on Saturday night. She told us they'd taken their dogs down to Sizewell for a walk: "Then all of a sudden we could see there was a spout coming down into the water.

    "It literally drew the water up into itself and continued for 30 minutes and then stopped. As we stood and watched it, it reformed again.

    "It was amazing, absolutely amazing."

    Saturday's 2-1 defeat to little known Belgian side Royal Union Saint-Gilloise was far from the result Ipswich Town, external wanted from their final pre-season friendly.

    After taking the lead through a Daryl Murphy header, Town were pegged back by two goals inside four minutes.

    "I should be stood here waxing lyrical about a really good performance and a comfortable win," said McCarthy. 

    "Then we give a goal away. Although it's a good goal by them, they've broken on us. 

    "It's a dereliction of duty on the edge of the box, gross stupidity from our point of view that we've conceded."
