    Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service, external wants to recruit more women, and mums in particular, as on-call volunteer firefighters.

    The organisation says many women in the county could make great firefighters, but perhaps haven't considered joining the service.

    Sally Hammond, station commander in Ipswich, was the county's first full-time female firefighter when she joined 20 years ago. 

    She said: "I was concerned to begin with, especially in my interview when they told me I was going to be the first whole-time woman firefighter. 

    "Because I'd known some male firefighters, I kind of knew what I was going to get myself into and I felt that I had the confidence and ability to be able to be a firefighter."

    Students at the University of Suffolk say the establishment's change of name today, to become a fully-fledged university in its own right, offers an exciting future.

    Jonathan Dotchin, vice president of the Students' Union, says it's going to make a massive difference: "We're doing things like extending our freshers' campaign so it's now a fortnight long, instead of only a week which is a really big change.

    "I think that so much captures the excitement among the student body and the big difference it's going to make to them going forward."

    A centenarian from a care home in Kesgrave, who has returned to the hotel where she and her late husband used to celebrate their wedding anniversary every year, says the visit "has brought back so many memories".

    This Saturday would have been Mada Clare's 61st anniversary.

    She and her husband Bill started going to the Brudenell Hotel, external in Aldeburgh in the early 60s, and today a lunch was hosted for her and her two carers.

    She said the outing had "made her feel alive".

    Recent arrival Adam Webster has declared himself available for Ipswich Town's, external first game of the Championship season, against Barnsley on Saturday.

    Manager Mick McCarthy told us a couple of weeks ago that the 21-year-old was doubtful for the opener, after missing a chunk of the summer as he recovered from an ankle injury.

    The defender played his first 90 minutes for Town in Saturday's loss to Royal Union Saint-Gilloise.

    "The ankle's really good, it's held up really well," Webster told BBC Suffolk. 

    "It's the manager's decision [whether I play], but, yeah, I am raring to go."

  12. Man jailed for rape and sexual assault of a boypublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 1 August 2016

    A man has been jailed for 18 years for six counts of rape and two of sexual assault on a boy, who was under eleven at the time of the offences.

    Paul Knappett, 56, formerly of Cambridge Road in Lowestoft, was also given an additional six years on extended licence, external, for the offences which took place more than five years ago.

    Knappett had pleaded not guilty, which meant his victim had to give evidence against him during the trial at Ipswich Crown Court.

    Speaking after his sentencing on Friday, DC Annabelle Bunn said: "The physical and psychological effect the offences have had on him are incalculable and yet he still found the courage to give evidence in the court room to bring Knappett to justice."

    Suffolk is officially home to its own independent university now University Campus Suffolk has been re-branded.

    Vice chancellor Richard Lister said: "Although we are community-based, this is not just about a university for Suffolk.

    "We have to reverse the Suffolk brain-drain, we have to bring in bright people from the rest of the country, from the rest of the world, to replace those bright Suffolk students that leave and go and study somewhere else."

  17. More than 850 drivers caught by Orwell Bridge speed cameras in first 13 dayspublished at 15:35 British Summer Time 1 August 2016

    Police say that 857 drivers were caught speeding on the Orwell Bridge between 1 July, when average speed cameras were switched on, and 13 July.

    A 60mph limit was introduced in April. The highest recorded speed was 100mph.

    Tim Passmore, Police and Crime Commissioner, said he was flabbergasted that a "mindless bunch of selfish people actually think they have the right to be cavalier and disregard theirs, and other people's safety.

    "The other reason that we put the average speed cameras in there is because we all know the absolute chaos and pandemonium that happens in Ipswich when the bridge is closed if there's an accident or something."

  19. Man charged with dangerous drivingpublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 1 August 2016

    A man has been charged with dangerous driving and possession of an offensive weapon - namely a baseball bat.

    Police say the 41-year-old was arrested late on Saturday night, after reports that a lorry had been in collision with a number of cars in the Woodbridge area.

    He was detained in custody, and was due to appear before magistrates in Ipswich this morning.
