    Ipswich Town, external boss Mick McCarthy fears striker David McGoldrick could need surgery on his ankle injury, which would rule him out for around three months.

    The 28-year-old missed Saturday's defeat at Brentford after injuring himself in last week's EFL Cup tie against Stevenage.

    "It's appalling for all of us, certainly for Didzy as he's missed so much time through injury," said McCarthy. 

    "We're awaiting the news on Monday as to whether it's six to eight weeks, but it's more likely to been an operation and probably 12 weeks."

    Suffolk, external bowler Matt Wareing posted season-best figures of 4/52 on day one of his side's Minor Counties Championship, external match away to Buckinghamshire.

    The 22-year-old helped his team reduce Bucks to 136/9 at the close of play, still 78 runs short of Suffolk's first innings total.

    "I'm really pleased," said Wareing. "It's not been the best season personally, but today the ball came out of my hand well, it swung nicely and there was a little bit of movement off the pitch.

    "It also helped that any edges (off the bat) went to hand and they hung on to it."

    Following Saturday's defeat at Workington, last night the Suffolk side lost 50-39 at Glasgow, with Danny King (pictured) top scoring with a paid 11. 

    Meanwhile, Mildenhall, external fell at the first hurdle in yesterday's National League Fours tournament.

    The Fen Tigers failed to progress from their group which was won by the Rye House Raiders, who went on to take the title.

    Suffolk posted 214 all out from 56.4 overs before Bucks closed the day on 136/9 - still 78 runs behind. 

    Matt Salisbury, who scored 58 not out, and Josh Cantrell with 56 were the pick of Suffolk's batsmen while bowler Matt Wareing returned figures of four wickets for 52 runs.

    Ipswich Town, external manager Mick McCarthy was stunned by the manner of his side's 2-0 defeat at Brentford on Saturday.

    After a good first half, Town had no response to two quickfire goals from Bees defender John Egan after the break. 

    "To concede that first goal seemed to have a really devastating effect on us," said McCarthy. 

    "It's not like one of my teams. We seemed to unravel there and look like we were going to concede a second, and we did. From that point on I don't think we really threatened."

    Suffolk swimmer Chris Walker-Hebborn (pictured left) has won his first Olympic medal.

    The 26-year-old was part of the Great Britain team that took silver, behind the United States, in the men's 4x100 metres medley relay.

    Walker-Hebborn was joined on the podium in Rio by team-mates Adam Peaty, James Guy and Duncan Scott.

    The race saw America's Michael Phelps win his 23rd Olympic gold medal.

    Joey Abbs says he "won't be surprised" if Shaun Whiter wins a gold medal in the 2020 or 2024 Paralympics and adds: "I hope he does."

    Shaun Whiter has been paying tribute to the people who've contributed to a fund that has seen more than £100,000 pledged in aid of his rehabilitation. 

    Money from sporting events has also been given to his friend Joey Abbs, who also received serious injuries in the hit-and-run crash.

    Speaking at a fundraising event in Exning on Saturday, Mr Whiter said: "It gets quite emotional when you see all these people that have donated anonymously,you'd like to say thank you. 

    "I'd love to see them so a big shout out and a massive massive thank you from my heart and from Joey as well that people have pulled together.

    "We had the football community where we both come from - you go through the bad bits with football but we've now seen the good parts of football - that's come from what's happened over the last month."

    Shaun Whiter, who had to have both his legs amputated after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Newmarket at the beginning of July, says he would love to get involved with the Paralympics.

    Speaking at a fundraising event in Exning at the weekend, he said: "I'm not saying I'm going to turn up and do it but I would love to go there.

    "I have a dream, you've got to start somewhere and now if I can focus with sport it's going to help me progress more within myself and get me through these times."

  10. Hit-and-run crash amputee footballer speaks out about the driver responsiblepublished at 08:05 British Summer Time 15 August 2016

    A footballer who lost both of his legs in a hit-and-run crash has spoken out about the driver responsible.  

    Shaun Whiter, who was helping his friend Joey Abbs to change a tyre near Newmarket when it happened, said: "Being 27, I didn't dream of this. Personally think I shouldn't have to deal with this but it's a case of now I have to deal with this and I hope he's aware of that."

    Jan Adamec, 40, of Haverhill, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He is on remand and will be sentenced in September.

    Mr Whiter, 27, said: "Without a doubt it's good to know that the guy is off the streets."

    Volunteer archaeologists, excavating a field near Coney Weston, say they think the site was part of the medieval village. 

    Chris Flood says they've found a variety of items: "A huge amount of pottery, bones, nails, teeth, we had lots of oyster shells the first year, so we think they were harvesting fresh-water oysters in the stream running through.

    "We had a medieval tithe barn which we excavated last year and all the corn from the surrounding area would have been stored in there for the abbott of Bury St Edmunds."

    A group of villagers is still excavating a field near Coney Weston six years after it was recognised as being of archaeological interest.

    Volunteers manage the dig between April and October in the field which is owned by Suffolk Wildlife Trust, external.

    Chris Flood says her husband Julien was the first to spot its significance: "There'd been a drought that summer and the building was exposed, so he went back home, told our neighbour, who is a local historian, and he got the history people involved and nobody knew what it was. 

    "The end result was that we were allowed to have a dig here and it's been continuing every year for the last five or six years."

  19. Man arrested on suspicion of raping two women in Great Cornardpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 12 August 2016

    A man has been arrested in connection with two rapes in Great Cornard in the early hours of Sunday morning.

    Police were contacted by a woman who said she'd encountered a man at about 04:30 while walking back from Sudbury town centre, and was later raped by him at an address in Great Cornard. 

    Further inquiries revealed that a second victim had also been raped at the same address, in what police say was the "same time-frame".

    A 34-year-old man, from New Romney in Kent, was arrested at Liverpool Street railway station last night at around 22:00 and brought back to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

  20. Brandon assault: suspect no longer being soughtpublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 12 August 2016

    Detectives investigating a serious sexual assault which took place in Brandon in June say they're no longer trying to identify a suspect whose description was previously circulated.

    The incident was alleged to have taken place in the early hours of 2 June, in an open space close to Knappers Way.

    Police say the victim has been supported by specialist trained officers, and they are now satisfied there is no risk to the wider public.
