    Drug dealer Tevin Birmingham, 21, of Spring Road, Ipswich was tried in June following the death of Andrew McGown (pictured), 33, of Great Yarmouth. 

    Mr McGowan bled to death after being repeatedly stabbed in a flat in Dickens Court, in the seaside town last November.   

    Birmingham's accomplice, Warren Ricardo Blake, 18, of Thorncliffe Road, South London, has already been jailed for 17 years for murdering Mr McGowan.

    Just three years after taking up triathlon, an Ipswich woman is preparing to make her Great Britain debut at this month's ITU World Triathlon Championships, external.

    Verity Smith, 40, flies out to Mexico on 13 September, with her race five days later.

    "I bought a road bike five years ago, and then took up triathlon three years ago when a friend from Ipswich JAFFA, external suggested cycling, and it went from there really," Smith said.

    "My family and friends are all quite excited. Some of my friends are quite amusing and keep going on about me being a GB athlete, or 'GBV' as one of them keeps calling me."

    Cycling of a different kind now... and Verity Smith is just over two weeks away from competing for Great Britain at the ITU World Triathlon Championships, external in Cozumel, Mexico.

    The 40-year-old, who only took up the sport three years ago, will be one of 70 athletes lining up for the ladies, 40-44 years age group race.

    She told BBC Suffolk: "I'm very excited, although I'm probably 50% nervous and 50% excited. So yeah I can't wait to get out there and try to do my best."

    With calls being made for cycle tracks to be in a bright colour to make them more obvious to other road users, we've put a call in to the former head of roads policing in Suffolk to see what he thinks.

    Chris Spinks told us it's always an issue with cyclists and pedestrians, who he describes as "vulnerable" groups, sharing the same space at motor vehicles.

    He said: "If anything can make it more obvious where cyclists and pedestrians can be, to the motorist, it's got to be a good thing."

    He added that cyclists have to play their part too: "If an area is marked as a cycleway they can't assume they have carte blanche to use it as they wish, they must be aware of other road users."

    We've been looking at the suggestion that cyclists might be safer using Suffolk's cycle paths if they're a bright colour. The call comes from an Ipswich grandmother who was injured in an cycling accident at the start of August.

    Former Ipswich Town, external prospect Byron Lawrence (pictured right) says he's "loving" his time at Leiston, external, but admits he has one eye on returning to the pro-game.

    The midfielder, who was on the bench for Town as a 15-year-old, has been in sparkling form as Glenn Driver's men have won their first six games of the Ryman Premier Division, external season.

    "I've come down to enjoy my football and take a step to go back up," said Lawrence. 

    "Maybe I did lose a bit of confidence and I wasn't enjoying it as much. I'm happy with the decision I made, I'm loving it."

    We couldn't help but wonder how this shopper at Ipswich's newest Aldi store got those televisions into her car... the Scrivener Drive Aldi is the third one to open in the town.

    Despite losing Daryl Murphy Ipswich Town's, external latest signing Jonny Williams believes the club is still capable of challenging for promotion this season.

    The 22-year-old (pictured left) returned to Portman Road yesterday, from Crystal Palace, external, for a fourth time.

    "Hopefully I can build on my last loan spells and hopefully add a few more goals and assists to help the team be where it wants to be in the Premier League and around the play-off spots. We're capable of doing that this season."

    A call to make cycle lanes a bright colour as a way of preventing accidents, has been given a cautious welcome by a campaign group looking to make Ipswich safer for cyclists.

    "In the Netherlands they won't use paint... they'll use is red tarmac and that way the paint won't wear off. One of the problems of using paint is it can be quite slippery."

    An Ipswich grandmother who broke two bones in her back in a crash involving her bike and a car says cycle lanes should be painted a bright colour so everyone can see them.

    Jaki Vallance, 62, was injured at the start of August and is still wearing a back brace.

    She says: "I think cycle lanes should be painted a bright colour, like blue, so people can see they're there."

  13. Investigation launched after man dies at Parham Airfieldpublished at 08:50 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    An investigation is under way after a man died at Parham Airfield, near Framlingham, on Tuesday afternoon.

    Police say they were called to the scene by the ambulance service, at about 15:10, as has been reported by the East Anglian Daily Times, external.

    It's understood a lorry was involved in an incident involving power cables and had caught fire.

    A man was rescued from the vehicle, but despite the efforts of the emergency services he couldn't be saved.

    Glenn Driver's men are currently sitting pretty on top of the Ryman Premier Division, external after winning all six of their league games to date.

    Lawrence, asked how far Leiston can go this season, said: "It's still only six games in so I don't know."

    He added: "I'm just loving playing and every game I feel like we're the better team and we're dominating possession and I think we can keep winning games and keep this run going."
