  6. So why is there a GP shortage?published at 09:33 British Summer Time 14 September 2016

Back now to the relaunch of an initiative to set up a retained GP service in Suffolk, after a general shortage prompted a national programme to tackle the problem.

There are about 500 GPs in Suffolk with 70 current vacancies, although some of these may have been filled by nurse practitioners. That consititutes a vacancy rate of approximately 14%

Dr Richard West, chairman of the Suffolk Local Medical Committee, said of being a GP: "I suppose in some quarters it might be seen as a step down, but I think that attitude is changing.

"As a medical student you get lots more exposure to the hospital specialities - traditionally more than you do exposure to general practice - and therefore if you see those things when you're training then you get an enthusiasm for one of those and you want to carry on with one of those."

Blues boss Mick McCarthy said: "We weren’t particularly good with the ball but we were resilient and tough and hard to beat.

"When they were murdering us for 10 minutes in the first half, we got blocks and headers and stopped crosses and made saves - all the things you have to do to be a successful team."

Town's next match is at home on Saturday to Aston Villa.

  8. Initiative to tackle shortage of doctors looks at 'retaining' medicspublished at 08:49 British Summer Time 14 September 2016

Doctors in Suffolk have welcomed an initiative to relaunch a retained GPs service in the county aimed at tackling a shortage of medics.

It plans to offer part-time hours to those who have left work in the profession in the past two years.

The scheme is part of the national NHS England and Health Education England initiative, and matches doctors with practices that have suitable working hours available.

It would provide additional financial support which recognises their role is different from that of a regular, salaried GP.

    The scheme is aimed at:

    • GPs who are currently not working but who have done so in the last two years
    • At locums who wish to take up a more permanent position in a GP practice
    • GPs who are considering leaving due to a need to reduce their working hours
