  1. Firearms licensing costs police force more than £145,000 a yearpublished at 09:59 British Summer Time 12 September 2016

    A Suffolk gun consultant, external says if firearms licensing was moved online, it would save money.

    The county's police and crime commissioner says it currently costs the police force around £146,000 a year, which comes out of its budget, to process applications.

    Graham Downing says: "For whatever reason, the government has not brought forward, and the police service has not brought forward, the e-commerce system. 

    "If we did that, then I think it would introduce a whole range of new efficiencies and better working practice into the system."

    There are more guns per head of the population in Suffolk and Norfolk, external than anywhere else in the country, according to government statistics.

    Rail services between Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge and Ely are back to normal, after the line was closed over the weekend because of a fire at the Old Station in Higham on Saturday.

    Suffolk's police and crime commissioner has expressed his concern for people who enter the county illegally.

    Speaking after reports that a group of suspected illegal immigrants was seen at Bawdsey on Saturday evening, Tim Passmore said:  "In many cases illegal immigration is the work of organised crime groups and of course people are exploited.

    "Very often they're very vulnerable, and it's an intolerable situation and something that does need to be sorted very quickly."

    The assistant harbour master at Felixstowe Ferry says there was a lack of support after suspected illegal immigrants were sighted at Bawdsey on Saturday evening.

    Stephen Reid said when the Border Force first contacted them "[they] said they'd be down within five minutes."

    Mr Reid said that in reality, it took about an hour: "By that time it was dark, and just too dangerous for us to go out and assist them."

    He felt his side played well enough at the Madejski Stadium to get something out of the fixture, and there's no need for anyone to feel sorry for themselves.

    "What's important is that we don't go away from here and be so flat that we can't get ourselves up for Tuesday. I've said 'let's go there and win' and get three points from two games."

    Ipswich Town, external manager Mick McCarthy was fuming after his side conceded a 95th minute penalty to lose 2-1 at Reading on Friday.

    The referee pointed to the spot when Town full-back Jonas Knudsen hauled down Joey van den Berg.

    "I thought we were the most likely team to win it," said McCarthy. "I'm incandescent with rage and am doing well to come and speak to you in calm tones."

    "They were playing for it. The guy's run into Jonas and I don't what he can do. It happened in both boxes and I think (other) penalties could've been given. A tough one to take that."

    A yacht is thought to have brought a number of suspected illegal immigrants to the quayside at Bawdsey on Saturday evening.

    Police, who were contacted by a member of the public at about 18:30, say a group were seen to enter a black Range Rover on the quay and leave the area in the direction of Woodbridge.

    The vehicle was later found outside a pub in Bromeswell and six people, four men and two women, were seen to flee the area.

    Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the group, as they're concerned for their welfare.

    Among the stories we'll be bringing you this morning is reaction to news that the county has among the highest number of shotgun and firearm certificates per capita, reports of illegal immigrants coming into the county at Bawdsey, and the latest on a blaze at the weekend at a disused railway station.

    But we'll start by checking out the weather. I'm delighted to say it looks as if summer's going to be making its presence felt again for a few days.
