    Around five police cars, as well as fire engines and ambulances have been seen at the scene. 

    The fire service has described it as a "water rescue".

    Watch this space this morning as we bring you news of the fine Network Rail faces over a death of a former actress on a railway crossing at Needham Market in 2011.

    The new owner of turkey-producer Bernard Matthews says all 2,000 jobs are safe at the Holton base in Suffolk and at the Norfolk plant.

    We'll also bring you news of the progress of a Suffolk lifeguard attempting to paddleboard across the English channel - from Dungeness to Boulogne.

    Neither Bernard Matthews nor its buyer are confirming the turkey producer has been sold, but one of the unions is.

    Steve Harley, Unite's regional officer, said: "The announcement that Bernard Matthews has been sold by its owners Rutland Partners to the 2 Sisters Food Group appears to be good news for the 2,000-strong workforce. 

    "We are giving the news a cautious welcome.

    "However, in takeover situations, there are always matters that need to be clarified. 

    "Unite is meeting the company tomorrow where searching questions will be asked on future employment, pay, and terms and conditions. 

     "We will also be asking about the status of the pension scheme under the new owners, although it is expected that our members won't be affected in this respect by today's takeover."

    The union said it represented about 800 members of the 2,000-strong workforce at the production sites at Great Witchingham in Norfolk, Holton in Suffolk and the animal food mill at Bawsey near King's Lynn.

  9. Lib Dem leader calls for second referendum on Brexit dealpublished at 17:00

    Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron says his party's pro-EU stance is striking a chord with voters in the East - even though most of the region voted Leave in the EU referendum.

    In an interview with BBC Look East, he calls for another referendum once the Brexit deal has been negotiated. 

    "We completely respect the result of the June referendum, but what will happen now is a deal will be stitched up between people at Westminster and Brussels which will have a massive impact on jobs and prices in the East," he said.

    "How dare the government impose on the Eastern region a deal which nobody voted for, so we are calling for the people to decide not just on the departure but the destination too."

    Liberal Democrat membership in the East has increased by 1,700 since the EU referendum.

    A week-long campaign by Norfolk & Suffolk Roads Policing Unit saw more than 1,100 drivers commit speeding offences in the county.

  11. Lifeguard prepares to cross the English Channel on a paddleboardpublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 20 September 2016

    A lifeguard from Pakefield near Lowestoft is preparing to cross the English Channel between Dungeness and Boulogne tomorrow on a paddleboard - a distance of 46km (28 miles).

    Nick Ayers, 25, is taking on the challenge to raise funds for the RNLI, external, for whom he works as a lifeguard supervisor, and also as training for other events around the world.

    He says: "I'll just be using my arms, alternating between five minutes on my knees, double arm stroke and then five minutes on my stomach with a single arm stroke."

    He estimates the crossing could take up to eight hours.

    Kezi Mellen, 23, from Ipswich, said: "I'm a Lego fan and I like the iconic architecture of the university, so I thought I'd challenge myself to try and recreate it. 

    "It took me five days to build.”

    The Pensions Regulator, external says it's aware of concerns about the possible sale of the turkey producer Bernard Matthews.

    The company, which has its head office at Great Witchingham, Norfolk, was named after its founder who died in 2010, aged 80.

    It was put up for sale in June following "disappointing results" over the past year.

    In 2007, it had a difficult time with an outbreak of bird flu at its Holton factory near Halesworth in Suffolk.

    In a statement, a spokesperson for the pensions regulator says they're in contact with trustees and the Pension Protection Fund, external.

    A spokesman for the Unite union says they're in contact with Bernard Matthews, after concerns were raised over workers' pensions amid rumours that the firm is to be sold.

    The company is Britain's biggest turkey producer, employing more than 2,000 people at 50 sites across Norfolk and Suffolk. It was put up for sale in June following what it described as "disappointing results" over the past year.

    The food group, 2 Sisters, external, which makes Goodfellas Pizza and Fox's biscuits, is reported to be interested in buying it, but it's refusing to comment on what it calls market rumour and speculation.

    Steve Harley, Unite union regional officer, says "there's an open line of communication"  between them and the turkey provider, adding they will make no further comment "due to the fact that any sale or terms of sale have not been divulged to the union".

    Leiston have scored 24 goals in their seven league fixtures to date, but manager Glenn Driver accepts they might find it more difficult to find the back of the net on this occasion.

    "Tonbridge have conceded just two league goals, so we know they are going to be good defensively," Driver said. "That said, we won't sit back, we'll definitely go there looking to win."

    A Victoria Cross awarded to a Lowestoft fisherman could be brought out of storage and used for the benefit of the town he loved and fought for.

    Tom Crisp died when his fishing boat was attacked, external by a German submarine during World War One in 1917.  

    The original is kept in a council vault, but his great-granddaughter, Jayne Groom, says her family is also keen to look at ways it could be used to provide a permanent memorial: "I would like to think in the future that maybe the medal could be used to help the community.

    "We just feel that it's a nice thing that local people know what he did, and what he did for the fishing community, and to do with the war."

    Plans to display a replica of Tom Crisp's medal will be discussed later, external by Waveney District Council's cabinet.
