  4. Police seek help in finding weapon used in attempted murderpublished at 17:47 British Summer Time 19 September 2016

    Detectives investigating an attempted murder in Ipswich are appealing for assistance to locate the weapon used in the attack which happened in Prospect Street on Friday night.

    Officers have carried-out extensive searches in the vicinity of the attack off Bramford Road, but have not been able to locate the knife which was used to stab the victim.

    Det Ch Insp Eamonn Bridger said: "We are anxious that the knife is located and taken off the streets so it does not harm anybody else."

    Ipswich Town have named a strong under-23s side for their match against Leeds United tonight.

    Best made his first-team debut as a substitute in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Aston Villa and is hoping to build up his match fitness ahead of this weekend's trip to Elland Road.

  6. Witnesses sought over Ipswich rapepublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 19 September 2016

    A woman was raped in Ipswich town centre in the early hours of Sunday morning.

    The woman reported being attacked between 01:00 and 03:00, between Old Cattle Market and Upper Orwell Street.

    Police say the victim is being supported by "specialist trained officers", and witnesses of the attack ware being sought.

    Heavy showers will make their way down the east coast this evening, with outbreaks of showery rain spreading southwards.

    It'll turn murky in places overnight, with some mist and fog. 

    There'll be light winds, and temperatures should stay in double figures.

    Tomorrow will be generally cloudy with some bright or sunny spells. The last of the rain should clear, and it should then be largely dry - although there is the chance of some heavy and slow moving showers.

    BBC Suffolk presenter Mark Murphy has been to Sudbury to gauge the size of the problem regarding illegal parking in disabled bays:

    Responding to criticism that it's a "free-for-all" for drivers and the situation is not adequately monitored, a spokesman for Babergh District Council, external said: "We only have responsibility for enforcing car parking in the actual car parks themselves, not on the road. 

    "On-road parking is a police responsibility... It has to be the police."

    Suffolk Police, external said they are responsible for dealing with illegal parking on roads, but said they have to make sure they prioritise their resources, adding that they are "still dealing with it and will continue to deal with it".

  13. Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will help Regent Theatre mark 25 yearspublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 19 September 2016

    A gala performance by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, external on Wednesday will mark the 25th anniversary of the "new" Ipswich Regent Theatre, external.

    Back in 1991, Ipswich Borough Council saved the theatre for live entertainment, after the previous owners, the Rank Organisation, announced they were going to convert the venue, formerly known as the Gaumont, into a five-screen cinema complex. 

    Following a groundswell of public opinion, when a petition of more than 30,000 signatures was presented, the council brokered a deal to save the venue and has since owned and managed the theatre. 

    The Royal Philharmonic Pops Orchestra performed the 'opening' concert.

    Bryony Rudkin, deputy leader of the council, said: "It’s hard to imagine Ipswich without the Regent – no top comedy acts, no musicals, ballet extravaganzas, great live music appealing to all ages, and, of course, no panto. 

    "The council was right to step in 25 years ago and hundreds of thousands of people are still feeling the benefit.”

    A cat that used to bring golf balls home from its local course seems to have cured himself of the habit, according to his owner.

    The problem meant Aldeburgh Golf Club, external had to formulate a special local rule to deal with it.

    Peter Bryson says they thought Merlin, associated the golf balls with the ping-pong balls he used to play with at home, but since they've got rid of those, the steady stream of golf balls has stopped.

    He added that they haven't had any "unexpected gifts" for at least three months: "We assume because we haven't heard anything from the golf club, and he isn't bringing any home, the issue isn't there any more."

    The Spa Pavilion Theatre, external in Felixstowe has been named as the Best New Business in this year's Suffolk Coastal Business & Community Awards, external.

    Within the last 12 months, the recently-re-opened theatre has been refurbished and unveiled two new restaurants, employing 30 new staff.

    Director Ray Anderson said: “We were amazed. It was wonderful to be nominated as finalists and so to win was the icing on the cake for us."

    McCarthy was full of praise for Jonathan Douglas (pictured) and Cole Skuse after Saturday's 0-0 draw against Aston Villa.

    "Dougie's been terrific," said McCarthy. "I didn't play him in the first couple of games, but since he's got in he's undroppable - him and Skusey." 

    "That might change throughout the season, but for now those two have just been terrific.

    "So it's sad for some of the others, because I've got good midfield players, but it's nice when two of them are playing like that."

    Despite the fact he hasn't scored in 34 matches, Ipswich Town, external striker Freddie Sears still has the full backing of his manager Mick McCarthy.

    The 26-year-old shone in the latter stages of Saturday's draw against Aston Villa, hitting a post and going close with a couple of free-kicks.

    "He's been outstanding and he's played in most games," said McCarthy. "I just think he's been an outstanding performer and I'm not bothered he hasn't scored his goals because they'll come." 

    "I'm not badgering him. I had spells in my career when I didn't play well and managers stood by me because I did the right things, I was professional and I didn't let people down, and that's Freddie."
