    A man is due in court today charged with the attempted rape of a woman at Melton railway station in July.

    The 24-year-old from Ipswich was arrested yesterday.

    British Transport Police, external made CCTV footage relating to the incident publically-available shortly after the alleged incident, which happened just before 22:00 on Tuesday, 19 July.

    In response to national figures about surgery being cancelled one to three days before admission, chief operating officer Jon Green said: "We minimise the number of cancellations and if we do have to unfortunately cancel someone, we get them back in as quickly as possible at the most suitable time for that patient."

    Mr Green, who admitted they also don't record cancellations made prior to the day of surgery, said in some ways their cancellations in that timeframe are "slightly higher than on-the-day cancellations".

    He explained: "We try and give as much notice [as possible] if we're going to have to cancel a patient."

    Speaking after figures nationally show tens of thousands of operations nationally are cancelled, but not officially counted, deputy chief executive Neill Moloney said "transparency" was very important.

    "We're very clear we are willing to provide that information and we will now be recording that," he said.

    Mr Moloney also said about 1% of operations are cancelled on the day, and a further 1% cancelled between one and three days prior to admission.

    Police now say the collision on Tuddenham Road in Ipswich this morning, was between a cyclist and a car, not a pedestrian as they previously thought.

    The cyclist, a man in his 40s, has been taken to Ipswich Hospital "as a precaution".

    The James Paget Hospital Trust, external was the only trust serving patients from Suffolk, that responded to questions from the BBC asking for details of operations cancelled between one and three days before admission.

    Official statistics only record on-the-day cancellations, of which there were 164 at the Gorleston hospital last year, but our investigation found 934 more were cancelled between one and three days before they were due to take place.

    Both Ipswich, external and the West Suffolk Hospitals, external said they were unable to provide the figures.

    Police say a car has collided with a pedestrian on Tuddenham Road in Ipswich, at the Colchester Road roundabout.

    Emergency services are on the scene and drivers are warned that queues are building up in the area.

    An Ipswich woman who had a mastectomy operation cancelled the night before the procedure was due to take place, has described the experience as "absolutely devastating".

    The patient was speaking following an investigation by the BBC, which found the true figure of cancelled operations could be higher than government statistics, as only cancellations on the day are officially counted.

    The woman, who has asked not to be named, was scheduled for surgery at Ipswich Hospital. She said: "I'd got myself so prepared and so ready.

    "This is not an operation I wanted ever to have, or ever thought I would. You get so prepared and then it's not happening. 

    "It was just devastating, absolutely devastating."

    An investigation by the BBC has found the figure could be higher than official statistics. Only cancellations on the day are officially counted.

    The use of physical restraint against mental health patients at the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust has risen by 12% over the past three years, North Norfolk MP and former health minister Norman Lamb has said.

    Mr Lamb says figures collated under the Freedom of Information Act show there were 2,613 incidents in 2013/14, and 2,860 in 2015/16.

    Mr Lamb said patients were also regularly being subjected to face-down restraint, "a dangerous and distressing practice" which can restrict breathing.

    But the figures showed there had been an 18% decrease in face-down restraints over the past year, from 847 to 695.

    Mr Lamb said: "Norfolk and Suffolk has made encouraging progress in reducing the use of face-down restraint over the past year, but there is clearly still a long way to go.

    "The overall rise in physical restraint, despite the national guidance, gives serious cause for concern."

  17. Man whose body was found by the river in Ipswich 'was in his 30s'published at 17:18 British Summer Time 21 September 2016

    Police say a man whose body was found at Pooleys Yard, off Ranelagh Road, this morning was in his 30s.

    His death is being treated as unexplained but police do not believe there were any suspicious circumstances.

    The force has asked for anyone who was in the area between 19:00 yesterday and 07:00 this morning, and who saw anything unusual, to get in contact.

    It emerged today that Bernard Matthews had gone into administration before it was sold.

    Deloitte was appointed administrators of Bernard Matthews and oversaw the sale to Boparan Private Office. 

    Dan Butters, joint administrator and partner in Deloitte's restructuring services practice, said: "This famous 65-year old brand had been operating in a challenging market for some time, and today's announcement is a positive outcome for the business and the brand.

    "We are pleased that all the jobs have been preserved and the business can make a fresh start with new owners."
