Research by BBC Suffolk has also found that 70% of the 368 councillors at county and district level the county are white men, despite there being a slightly higher proportion of women in the population.

The figures reveal the lack of diversity of those making the decisions, which can effect everything from our education, rubbish collecting to highways.

    Councillor Colin Noble

The Conservative leader of Suffolk County Council, Colin Noble (pictured), said: "You have to recognise the fact, that for some reason, more women don't get involved and people from a BME background are not getting involved.

"So I think there's a lot more to do and we have to be very pro-active, because I want all of our councils to represent our communities and you do that by having the right cross-section of people in them."

  2. There's still a long way to go to get Suffolk's council diversity to reflect its populationpublished at 09:06 British Summer Time 24 October 2016

Research conducted by BBC Suffolk found only a third of councillors in Suffolk are women despite making up more than half the population.

There are also only an estimated seven councillors of black, Asian or mixed ethnicity (BME) background out of a total of 368 elected representatives at the county and district and councils.

Ipswich Borough Council has the most diversity with four councillors with BME backgrounds.

    Labour Cllr Shelly Darwin

Labour's Shelly Darwin at Ipswich is one of only two female councillors in Suffolk who have BME heritage.

She says you often face prejudice for having your own opinion.

She said: "For women, and BME women in particular, that kind of fear of being the one to challenge things and the one to ask difficult questions and to be a champion for equality - it's scary that people might think of you as the 'angry black woman' because you are speaking your mind."

"I haven't seen a better team, with better players" said McCarthy. "I've just said to the players 'You know what? there's some days there's not a lot you can do about it and that was one of those days'.

"I don't think we've played badly. We've had to spend most of the time defending against a very expensively assembled team and they're a good side."
