    Ipswich Town's, external FA Cup-winning captain Mick Mills (pictured left) believes the squad will benefit from having a break from Championship action this weekend.

    The Blues host National League leaders Lincoln City on Saturday, in the third round of this season's competition.

    "Everybody loves the FA Cup, except managers and I do not understand that," said Mills. "It's the only chance in football where you get a right good head-to-head; it's a 'me or you' situation.

    "It's not a league programme where if you mess up one day you can rectify it the next. As players you absolutely love that."

  3. Concern over plans to triple wild boar numbers at site near Braintreepublished at 08:40 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2017

    Residents living near Pitt Wood at New England on the Essex/Suffolk border say children's safety is under threat from plans to nearly triple the number of wild boar grazing there.

    Braintree councillors are due to decide on the plans tonight.

    A firm called New England Boar Company owns the land and has 55 wild boars on the site already.

    It wants to increase that number to 131. 

    The company sells meat products made from the animals.

    Local residents who live nearby say they're worried about so many boar being so close to an area used regularly by people with young children and pets.

    They say concerns like safety, noise and odour pollution are being ignored.

    The main post office in Ipswich town centre, which is currently housed in the Sailmakers shopping centre, is to relocate to the nearby WH Smith store.

    A six-week consultation on relocating the branch heard concerns about the move, in which the post office will be located upstairs in the shop.

    The branch will move at the beginning of March.

  6. Man in 70s held down by 'water board' burglars at his homepublished at 08:15 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2017

    Homeowners are being reminded to be cautious when answering the door, after a man in his 70s was held down at his Bury St Edmunds home on Tuesday evening, by a gang claiming to be water company officials.

    Det Insp Andrew Smethurst said while he wanted to stress it was an extremely rare type of attack, people should still be cautious: 

    "This is the first one we've had in some considerable time, so don't be unduly alarmed, but just be careful about who is knocking at doors" he said.

    "The level of force that they've used here is not unique but is certainly extremely rare."

    Officers were trying to assess what was taken in the raid.

    The friends and family of Barry Street, 32, stabbed to death at a travellers' site in Ipswich, attended his funeral today in Sudbury.

    Dozens of people arrived for the service at St Gregory's Church in the town and later walked behind the white coffin carried on a lorry to Sudbury Cemetery. 

    Mr Street was one of two men who received fatal stab wounds at the West Meadows site in Ipswich in an attack on 8 December. 

    A 17-year-old boy has appeared at a brief hearing at Ipswich Youth Court by videolink, charged with murdering Mr Street and Nathan Oakley, 18. 

  12. Six burglaries in one day in one area linked by policepublished at 16:46 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    Six burglaries in the Pinewood area on the outskirts of Ipswich yesterday are being linked by police. 

    The crimes took place in the same area, during daytime hours, at properties where the occupants were not at home and involved offenders forcing entry to steal cash and jewellery.

    The burglaries took place in the following locations: 

    • Grayling Road - brick smashed the glass of the patio door and items of jewellery taken.
    • Cinnabar Close - forced entry at rear of property with cash and jewellery stolen. 
    • Brimstone Road - brick to used to smash glass in a rear door. Cash and jewellery stolen.
    • Yew Tree Rise - rear forced entry. Cash and jewellery including two sovereign rings stolen. 
    • Quilter Drive - brick smashed glass patio door with cash and jewellery taken. 
    • Quilter Drive - rear forced entry but not yet clear what was stolen. 

    Police are urging members of the public to report suspicious incidents.

    An opportunity for beach hut owners in Felixstowe to have their say on planned increases in fees has been delayed. Suffolk Coastal Council, external sparked controversy last year when it revealed the changes.

    A consultation on the planned increases was due to begin yesterday but that's now been put on hold. Council officials are still working on a detailed wording for the consultation document. 

    Beach hut owners will get six weeks to register their views on newly drafted plans. 

    The council was forced to act after an outcry over their original plans for a 10% increase in fees for eight years and a £7,000 charge on lease agreements from April this year.

  15. Extra beds put in place at hospital 'full up' after Christmas demandpublished at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    Additional beds have been put in place at a hospital serving east Norfolk and north Suffolk after high levels of demand over Christmas and New Year. 

    All beds are full at the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston. 

    A spokesman said: "This situation is not unique to the trust at this time; other trusts across the country have also been dealing with pressures on their beds."

    Christine Allen, chief executive, said: "We are focusing on enabling discharges for those patients that are medically stable and fit for discharge. 

    "Junior doctors are being asked to work extra hours if they can and some clinics are being cancelled from Thursday 5 January to free up as many senior medical staff as possible. 

    "Patients that attend A&E are likely to have a long wait." 

    The hospital is advising patients to visit pharmacies which can provide "confidential, expert advice and treatment for a range of common illnesses and complaints" without the need for a GP appointment. 

    The NHS111 service is advised for urgent cases but not emergencies.

    The trust says GPs offer a "fast" service and surgeries have trained professionals who can advise patients.

  16. Stolen kittens returned to rehoming centrepublished at 13:51 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    Two 12-week-old kittens taken from the RSPCA rehoming centre at Martlesham after a break-in on Monday night have been returned healthy but hungry. 

    The brother and sister - called Pluto and Lilo - both have health issues and were found in an ottoman, the charity said, but no further details were given.

    "Staff at the RSPCA Suffolk and East Ipswich branch are relieved that the two kittens taken from the property on Monday night have been returned," a spokesman said. 

    "Police will now continue to investigate the incident so no further information is available at this time."

  17. Man arrested in connection with stabbing attack released on bailpublished at 13:03 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    A 30-year-old man from Ealing in west London arrested in connection with a stabbing attack in Ipswich in December has been released on bail until 28 February.

    He was held on suspicion of assisting an offender after an Audi car failed to stop for police on the northbound A12 on Monday and overturned near Colchester.

    A police car was damaged in the pursuit and two officers slightly injured, police said at the time. 

    Nine people have been arrested and bailed in connection with the stabbing of two men in Foundation Street, Ipswich, on Sunday 18 December 2016. 

    The injured men were taken to hospital in a critical condition and are both now recovering. 

    Officers are still keen to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of Blackfriars Court, Foundation Street, Lower Orwell Street or Rosemary Lane in Ipswich shortly before 22:00 on Sunday 18 December. 

  18. Football: Town striker Varney signs for Burtonpublished at 13:02 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    Ipswich Town striker Luke Varney has signed for Burton Albion on an 18-month deal. 

    The 34-year-old's six-month contract at Portman Road, due to expire on 12 January, has been cancelled early ahead of this weekend's FA Cup games.

    Burton manager Nigel Clough is pleased to sign a player with Varney's experience of the Championship. 

    "Luke's going to be pushing for a start but if he's not and we turn round and we look at him on the bench and think we can put Luke on at any time and he'll give us something different to what we've got," he said. 

    Varney has scored three goals for Town this season - the last being the equaliser against Cardiff last month in a game that finished 1-1 at Portman Road

    He first joined the Blues on loan from Blackburn Rovers in early 2015 before completing a permanent switch in December 2015.

    He was released at the end of last season before making the six-month deal at the beginning of the current campaign.

    Five men arrested in November have been charged in relation to hare coursing in Elmswell.

    Officers were called on 12 November to reports of a group of men with dogs in a field near Ashfield Road.

    Police attended and after a search stopped a vehicle containing a group of men and dogs in The Street, Badwell Ash. 

    A Mazda estate was seized under the Wildlife and Countryside Act and the five occupants, aged 23, 27, 31, 32 and 45, two from Surrey, two from Hampshire and one from Berkshire, were all arrested on suspicion of trespassing on land in pursuit of game. 

    One was also charged with driving a vehicle without insurance.

    They have all been bailed to appear at Ipswich Magistrates' Court.
