  1. Funeral of man killed in travellers' site stabbingspublished at 11:20 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    The funeral of one of two men stabbed to death at a travellers' site is being held today.

    Barry Street, 32, and Nathan Oakley, 18, were stabbed at the West Meadows site, Ipswich, on 8 December.

    Suffolk Police has warned there may be delays in and around Sudbury due to the lunchtime funeral.

    The funeral procession will travel between Ipswich and the town in the late morning and early afternoon.

    A 17-year-old boy was arrested and charged with murder in relation to the pair's deaths.

    A man in his 70s has been left "very shaken" after he was held down by robbers who ransacked his home.

    Four men knocked on the pensioner's door at Mitchell Avenue, Bury St Edmunds, at about 17:00 yesterday, claiming to work for the water board.

    The men then barged into the property. One held down the man while the others searched the house.

    The pensioner managed to get away and called Suffolk Police, external. The men fled and it is unclear what was taken.

    The offenders have been described as white, possibly in their 20s and all wearing dark scarves, partially over their faces, and dark hats. One is believed to have worn a green flat cap.

  3. Man seriously injured in crash between JCB and carpublished at 10:47 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    A man has been seriously injured after a JCB digger and a car crashed on the A14.

    The accident happened at 07:00 today on the eastbound carriageway at Levington, just after the Seven Hills interchange.

    Police, fire and ambulance crews attended the scene.

    The roof of the car had to be removed to free the 40-year-old driver. He has been taken to Ipswich Hospital.

    One lane of the A14 is currently closed.

  4. Nearly 1,500 now backing 'Hands Off' mobiles campaignpublished at 10:47 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    Nearly 1,500 people are already supporting BBC Radio Norfolk and Suffolk's "Hands Off" campaign to stop drivers using mobile phones at the wheel.

    The "Hands Off" message is also being made into car stickers as well as appearing on matrix road signs. 

    Suffolk county councillor James Finch, who is responsible for roads and transport, said he had written to Highways England asking it to put the messages on signs under its jurisdiction

    A private ambulance company working for the NHS in Essex and Suffolk has refuted claims of poor training and inadequate equipment made by former employees. 

    Private Ambulance Service, based in Basildon, Essex, says its blue-light driver training has been outsourced since January 2016.

    This new procedure, involving an approved training organisation used by the NHS, was introduced after those interviewed by the BBC had joined PAS, a spokesman for PAS said.

    "All of our staff are fully trained above the required standard, and we have full policies and procedures in place to deal with any eventuality within the business," he said.

    "We are regulated and inspected by the Care Quality Commission and were last inspected in October 2016. 

    "Whilst we appreciate there have been some allegations made, we do not accept the nature of the allegations to be accurate."

    The RSPCA, external has described the actions of Tyler Perkins, spared jail for killing a hedgehog, as a "intentional act of cruelty".

    Perkins was described in court as "vulnerable", and as having learning difficulties. 

    Inspector Jason Finch of the RSPCA said he hoped the sentence would act as a deterrent. 

    "Such horrible and intentional acts of cruelty aren't to be accepted and won't be tolerated," he said. 

    "This lad's obviously had a tough upbringing. Hopefully this will be a new start for him and he can get his life back on track." 

    He added that the local hedgehog population was in rapid decline.

    A "vulnerable" teenager, from Ipswich, has been spared jail for deliberately killing a hedgehog.

    The town's magistrates heard how unemployed Tyler Perkins, 18, of Wherstead Road, hit the animal with a brick, stabbed it with a knife and threw it over a neighbour's fence on 9 September.

    He was banned for keeping animals for 10 years and given an 18-month community order.

    He will also have to pay fines and costs totalling £385.

    Hedgehog dies after deliberate attack

    The court also heard the teenager was "vulnerable", had learning difficulties and had spent much of his life in care. 

    Magistrates told him he was spared jail because of his clean record and determination to do better. 

    Ipswich has been identified as a hot-spot for hedgehogs and a dedicated hedgehog officer was appointed in September.

    A 14-year-old girl from Ipswich has been found after going missing for five days.

    Megan Haggar had last been seen at about 23:30 on Thursday, 29 December but returned home safe and well last night, police said.

  9. Staff claim ambulance equipment was 'dirty and inadequate'published at 08:51 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    Current staff members at the Private Ambulance Service, based at Basildon, Essex, have claimed some equipment in its ambulances is in poor condition. 

    The equipment is sometimes dirty, inadequate or broken and they are asked to work dangerously long hours, they claim. 

    Existing members of staff at PAS got in touch with the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire programme about the issues they had encountered when working on non-emergency patient transport shifts.

    Alan Lofthouse, Unison's lead officer for ambulance workers, said any such conditions could prove hazardous to sick people being transported. 

    "The patient that's got to ride in the ambulance has the right for that ambulance to be clean and in a condition that's going to support their health," he said. 

    A spokesman for PAS said it offered a high level of patient care to all patients transported.

    Former drivers for a private ambulance firm based in Basildon and providing emergency cover for the NHS in Essex and Suffolk say they were given just an hour's training to drive under blue lights.

    The drivers used to work for a firm called Private Ambulance Service, contracted to respond to emergencies on behalf of East of England Ambulance Service during busy times. 

    The firm has told the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire programme all staff are fully trained and it doesn't accept these allegations.

  16. Two 12-week-old kittens taken from rehoming centre after break-inpublished at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    Two 12-week-old kittens have been taken from the RSPCA rehoming centre at Martlesham after a break-in last night. 

    The brother and sister - called Pluto and Lilo - both have health issues, the charity said.

    The kittens' paperwork and veterinary notes were also taken and police are investigating.

    Kennel supervisor Natalie Wood said: "They are both fed a special diet to aid some health issues, so we are extremely worried for their well-being. 

    "Both are micro-chipped and are now registered as stolen, so we would be so grateful if people can keep their eyes and ears open for any word on their whereabouts."

    The "Hands Off" campaign to urge people not to use their mobile phones while driving, launched by BBC Suffolk today is being supported by the police and other media outlets including local daily newspapers like the East Anglian Daily Times.

  18. Borough fails to hand out any fixed penalties for fly tippingpublished at 16:30 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    Ipswich Borough Council, external has not issued any fixed penalty notices for fly-tipping since new legislation was introduced in May, figures released today show.

    The highest number of fixed penalty notices in the county were issued by Waveney, external and Forest Heath, external councils who both gave out six, a nationwide freedom of information request has revealed. 

    Both St Edmundsbury, external and Suffolk Coastal, external gave out half that number while Mid Suffolk, external and Babergh, external only managed three between them. 

    But Ipswich Borough Council which encourages people to report fly-tipping via its website has issued no fixed penalties.

    A campaigner has been backing the Suffolk Police/BBC Suffolk drive to dissuade drivers from using their mobile phones behind the wheel.

    Paul Newman set up the campaign group Handsoff, external after his sister Ellen was killed in 2005 by a driver using a mobile phone, and he says an electronic phone blocker for vehicles could be used to prevent drivers being tempted to pick up the hand set.

    Ellen was knocked down, in Jersey, while walking along a pavement just yards from her house. The young driver was using his mobile phone and lost control of his vehicle.

    He pleaded guilty and was banned from driving and fined. The family was outraged, but the law at that time meant he avoided a custodial sentence. 

    Mr Newman is now campaigning for an electronic device to be fitted to all vehicles which creates a block around the driver preventing phones from working.
