    A 39-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder, after a man died of stab wounds on Wednesday in Ipswich, is continuing to be questioned by police.

    A man in his 40s was stabbed on Ancaster Road near to the town's railway station. 

    He died in Ipswich Hospital.

    Mendham's Peter Wright lost his second match in this season's Premier League of Darts, external last night.

    The 46-year-old was beaten 7-3 by world number one and defending champion Michael Van Gerwen, having trailed 6-0 at one stage. 

    The Dutchman threw a 170 checkout on the night as well.

    A former Ipswich Town, external player has beaten a current one to the Championship Player of the Month award for January.

    Tom Lawrence was nominated, but as you can see it went to Leeds striker Chris Wood.

    A little girl from Beccles, who's spent much of the past year in hospital, is celebrating her first birthday today.

    Emma Gulliver was diagnosed with a very rare breathing condition shortly after birth, and spent many months in Great Ormond Street Hospital.

    Her mum Claire said: "We're just having a bit of an open house to say to local friends and family to come over to meet Emma because so many people haven't met her yet, she's been in hospital for so long.

    "We just want to say thank you to friends, we're going to have tea and cake in the morning and we're having a big family party on Sunday, we're all very excited about that."

    Many places in the region saw a light dusting of snow yesterday and there'll be the risk of further wintry showers - not only today, but also into Saturday.

    It will be cold and cloudy to start with, although we are mostly starting off with temperatures just about freezing. There could be some sleet around later, but generally the further west you are the drier it will tend to be.

    The maximum temperature will be about 3C (37F), but in reality it will feel colder than that because of the bitterness of the easterly wind.

    Good morning, thanks for joining us.

    We're all set to bring you regular updates from across the county, and we'll start with a word of warning - there's a very chilly easterly wind so wrap up warm if you need to go out.

    What are we going to be looking at to begin with? Well, we'll see how the day develops, but as it's Friday, we'll start with a good news story - the little girl from Beccles who's celebrating her first birthday, having spent much of her first year in hospital.

    This evening will stay cloudy and cold, with the risk of further snow flurries moving in from the North Sea.

    This could bring a dusting of snow in places by morning, and the risk or a frost and icy patches.

    Staying above freezing on the coast, but inland temperatures will fall to -2C (28F).

    Some parts of the region could wake up to a dusting of snow tomorrow, and the risk of snow showers will continue through the day and overnight.

    A bitter north easterly wind will push snow showers further inland during the day.

    Temperatures reaching a high of 3C (37F).

  10. Edmund Gallery to closepublished at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2017

    The Edmund Gallery is due to close at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, external after running at a loss, external

    Artists due to exhibit at the gallery, which fronts on to Angel Hill, have been asked to meet to "discuss a way forward" after the decision to close it. 

    The Dean of St Edmundsbury, the Very Rev Dr Frances Ward, said the cathedral had "to be financially stringent".

    She said: "We know the importance of the Edmund Gallery to the local art and cultural world and it is with real concern that we have had to address the fact that it is running at a loss."

    She also stressed the cathedral was committed to supporting the arts, reflected in a year-long residency for artist Mark Cazalet.

    "We did not lightly take the decision to write to the artists who had booked the gallery and we very much regret the upset caused," she said.

    The cathedral’s director of commerce, Tony Kimber, said they had returned all deposits and were offering to work with exhibitors to try and find alternative space in the cathedral.

  11. Mirth in House as MP trumpets success of brass band championshipspublished at 16:49 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2017

    Culture minister Matt Hancock has pledged to "bang the drum" and "trumpet the success" of brass bands as he lent his support in the Commons. 

    The West Suffolk MP also revealed he was a cornet player in a brass band in his youth.

    Kettering Tory Philip Hollobone had praised Youth Brass 2000, a band for young people in his constituency who have been crowned national champions five years in a row.

    In reply, Mr Hancock congratulated them on their success, and said: "I myself played the cornet in a brass band when I was a boy, but I never rose to the dizzying heights of the national champions that he represents, and I send them all congratulations."

    Tory backbencher Jake Berry poked fun at Mr Hancock, saying: "The minister is certainly not known for blowing his own trumpet." 

    Amid laugher in the chamber, Mr Hancock replied: "I never got to the point of playing the trumpet, I was a mere cornet player, but I do want to bang the drum for all of the brass bands that he mentioned."

    Just days after scoring a hat-trick for the Ipswich Town under-23 team in an 8-0 demolition of Watford at Portman Road, striker Monty Patterson is off on another loan spell at Braintree Town.

    The 20-year-old (pictured here playing for New Zealand) spent two months with the National League side earlier in the season, and he'll be part of their squad until the summer. 

    "Spending time with them is what's helped him get in the under-23s and play like he did the other night," said Town boss Mick McCarthy. "He'd not been doing that before he went to Braintree. 

    "Going out and playing games has been of real benefit to him and he'll struggle to get that here at the moment when you bear in mind that he plays in Tom Lawrence's position."

    Ram-raiders have stolen more than 100 items from a store at the farm belonging to celebrity farmer Jimmy Doherty.

    The hit took place in the early hours of the morning, in Wherstead.

    A car was driven through a fence and into a wall of one of the shops. Police are investigating the possibility of a link with two other ram-raids reported yesterday in Hadleigh and Woolpit.

    It's a question that's probably been asked many times over many centuries, and while the staircase more than serves its purpose, here's a new method of getting from top to bottom.

    English Heritage is installing a temporary 6.6m slide at Framlingham Castle, external this half term, giving visitors the option to take a more unusual and elaborate approach to getting down from the castle’s wall walk.  

    The slide descends from the wall walk into the castle’s inner court.

    English Heritage says the slide will be officially opened by "a former castle resident, Queen Mary I herself". 

    There is also a competition for one lucky child to be the first visitor to try it out when it opens next Monday.

    The Marketmen's assistant manager Richard Wilkins (pictured), who is a former Us player, has told BBC Suffolk Sport their link to the League Two club benefits both parties.

    "We've got a good rapport with them and we often take some of their under-21 players who need that exposure to the Ryman Premier Division," he said.

    "It gives them a bit more idea what football is all about. Hopefully we'll be able to pick one or two of them up."

    Mick McCarthy could name an unchanged Ipswich Town team away at Aston Villa this weekend, although the Blues manager has admitted a few of his players are nursing injuries.

    One of them is Leicester loanee Tom Lawrence, who has been Town's player of the season so far, and is a contender for the Championship player of the month award for January.

    "He's had a really nasty bruise on his foot," McCarthy said. "He's not trained this week up until today, but he looks like being fine.

    "We've been nursing a few little bumps and bruises this week, but I'm hoping to have the same team available to pick from."
