Speaking after yesterday's terror attack in London, Mr Sutton said: "There's been a stream of politicians coming forward in the media and praising the police, quite rightly, for their response yesterday.

"These are the politicians who have taken 22,000 police officers off our streets.

"These are the politicians that mean we have fewer armed officers in this country than we did five years ago despite the fact that the threat that we face has increased so significantly."

"Water is coming down here at quite a speed onto the main street [Ipswich Road] and I must warn cars to slow down and not come flying through, because there are no signs to warn you there's this huge stream of water," he said.

He said: "If you start putting barricades around it, and make it impossible for the people who we represent to go near it and then you do something quite damaging to democracy and that's why it's always going to be an incredibly difficult balance to strike.

"The palace has been attacked several times before and it has always been the judgement that, although security has been tightened, it's important that we keep that balance so that it [Parliament] is accessible to the people of this country."

  12. London attack: Transport police to increase patrols across network published at 17:37 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March 2017

    Richard Westcott
    Transport correspondent

Following events in London earlier this afternoon , British Transport Police has told me extra officers will be out tonight, across the whole British rail network, not just London, "to reassure" people.

No specific numbers of how many extra officers have been given, and there's no indication as to whether they'll be armed or not.

To be clear, they say it's just to reassure people, and not because of a specific threat.

But you could see a bigger presence going home tonight.

The mother of an 18-year-old with an extremely rare form of motor neurone disease has paid tribute to her "very brave boy", who died earlier this month.

Scott Hawksworth's condition was so rare it was said he was one of as few as 12 people in the world who suffered from it.

The disease saw the teenager from Sudbourne deteriorate rapidly from a normal, healthy youngster, to one in a wheelchair in the space of a few months.

His funeral was held today at Aldeburgh Church.

His mother spoke to the BBC earlier today and described her son as "always having a smile on his face".

A car similar to the one in Dukes of Hazzard led the funeral procession.

    Brenner Woolley
    BBC Radio Suffolk sport

Ipswich Town defender Christophe Berra says whatever criticism is flying around at the moment, it's wrong to say the players are no longer playing for manager Mick McCarthy.

    Christophe Berra

"We go out there every week and we play for him," the 32-year-old said. "If we weren't we'd be letting the manager down first and foremost, letting the club down and letting ourselves down.

"We're all professionals, and we go out there and when we cross that white line we've got our own pride and we want to do well."
