    England's opening match at Hockey's World League Semi-Final, external next month will be an extra special one for Ipswich's George Pinner.

    The 30-year-old has been named as one of three co-captains of both the England and GB teams as the former seeks qualification for the World Cup, and the latter looks ahead to the 2020 Olympics.

    "I'm really pleased," Pinner told BBC Suffolk. "I first captained the side out in South Africa and that was a real honour and I got a real taste for it and it went well over there.

    "Once we decided it was going to be a player-led decision I'm obviously very honoured that my teammates have considered me right for the role."

  2. Woman fined hundreds of pounds after refusing to pay dog litter finepublished at 13:13 British Summer Time 25 May 2017

    A woman from the west of the county has been fined nearly £500 for not clearing up after her dog.

    Two dog walkers reported the actions of Jade Anderson from Hopton Road in Barningham last October.

    St Edmundsbury Borough Council issued her with a £50 fixed penalty fine, which she failed to pay and so the case was taken to court.

    Yesterday magistrates in Bury St Edmunds fined Ms Anderson £146, awarded council costs of £287.50 and imposed a £30 victim surcharge.

    Under new legislation, a public space protection order is being put in place across all of St Edmundsbury and all of Forest Heath, under which the fixed penalty fine will be £80 for anyone caught not picking up after their dog, or letting dogs into children’s play areas and certain fenced off pitches.

    The county's police and crime commissioner is reassuring people following the appearance of armed officers on patrol in some of our towns, saying: "There's absolutely no cause for alarm."

    Tim Passmore added: "I'd just like to add to that please be vigilant.

    "I know that's a catchphrase everybody says but it is important if you see anything suspicious don't hesitate get on that 999 number immediately and report in, because you just never know."

    The Aurora Orchestra, external - the only orchestra in the world which performs whole symphonies from memory - treated shoppers to an impromptu glimpse into their artistry yesterday when they performed in Charter Square in Bury St Edmunds.

    The surprise pop-up performance was ahead of their concert at the Apex Venue later that evening, performing Brahms' First Symphony from memory, as part of the 32nd Bury Festival, external.

    The RNLI, external is advising us not to try and swim if we get into trouble in open water this summer, but to remember one simple skill - floating.

    Ross MacLeod, Coastal Safety Manager with the RNLI, says it takes up less energy, and increases the chances of survival: "Do as little as possible whether that's just treading water or moving your arms and legs very gently, or holding onto something for as little as 60 to 90 seconds to allow the effects of cold water to pass.

    "You'll be able to get control of your breathing again and at this point you'll have a much better chance of surviving because it'll give you a clearer head and you'll then be able to call for help or swim for safety or wait for rescue services to arrive."

    The RNLI, who have launched their Respect the Water campaign, external, say 10 people died off the East Anglian coast in 2016.

    A conference is taking place today in Hopton, near Great Yarmouth, to find ways of raising awareness about modern day slavery.

    It's being held by Norfolk and Suffolk Police, and will include organisations like the Gangmaster and Labour Abuse Authority, British Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

    Modern day slavery happens everywhere, including rural parts of the two counties, and affects the most vulnerable men, women and children.

  19. Crush death sentencing to end todaypublished at 08:34 British Summer Time 25 May 2017

    The sentencing of two companies in connection with the death of four men six years ago will conclude at the Old Bailey today.

    Daniel Hazelton, 30, his brother Thomas, 26, Adam Taylor, 28, and 42-year-old Peter Johnson died when a 13-tonne steel structure collapsed on them at Claxton Engineering in Great Yarmouth in January 2011.

    The Hazelton brothers and Mr Johnson were from Stanton, near Bury St Edmunds, and Mr Taylor was from Rickinghall.

    Claxton Engineering and Encompass Project Management, of Thetford, have pleaded guilty to health and safety at work charges.
