  1. Dead whale to be removed from beachpublished at 08:47 British Summer Time 24 May 2017

    Luke Deal
    BBC Radio Suffolk

A dead fin whale that washed up on a Felixstowe beach is set to be removed today.

The 30ft (9m) decomposed carcass washed up on Sunday.

Experts from the Cetaceans Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) said a large injury on its body was the result of it being struck by a vessel "some time ago, perhaps hundreds of miles away".

It is too decomposed to carry out a full post-mortem test but samples have been taken to assist with analysis in terms of whale population, CSIP's Rob Deaville said.

  9. Job losses following Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft colleges' mergerpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 23 May 2017

    Andrew Turner
    BBC Radio Norfolk

Staff at two colleges are being consulted about redundancies after a merger between Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft further education colleges.

East Coast College, external says it's restructuring following the merger and an early trawl for voluntary redundancies and re-deployment has reduced pressure that could cause compulsory redundancies.

Thirty one full-time equivalent posts were identified as "at risk", but college management say they've reduced that figure to 15.

A statement says mostly academic staff are affected, and they're working with the trade unions and staff.

However, the college has also been critical of government funding, saying that despite both Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth colleges making savings over the past two years, they face increased staff costs through rising pay and pension contributions, and also a falling level of funding.

It says reducing staff will realise savings that will make both college campuses financially viable.

  10. Stranded minke whale 'too tricky to access'published at 16:31 British Summer Time 23 May 2017

    Kate Scotter
    BBC News

An attempt to examine the dead whale which washed up near Orford has been halted as the carcass is "inaccessible".

    Dead minke whale near Orford

The team from the Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) attempted to examine the minke whale on the River Ore estuary but could not get across the "dangerous" deep tidal mud flats.

The CSIP said it is hoped the carcass may become more accessible at a later date.

A spokesman said the whale had reportedly been seen alive in the vicinity shortly before being found dead at the weekend and given the fresh nature of the carcass, it is likely that it was alive when it became stranded.

It is expected the fin whale carcass at Felixstowe will be removed on Wednesday.

A third dead whale, believed to be a sperm whale, which CSIP said had been spotted out to sea is thought to have drifted further out.

"Schools have done a lot in terms of trying to cut some of their costs so we know there have been contributions from parents to keep schools going, we know some school trips have been cancelled because there's not enough voluntary contributions come in.

"Redundancies for teaching assistants and teachers is definitely on the horizon."
