  2. Almost five years since last whale death in countypublished at 10:41 British Summer Time 22 May 2017

The last whale to die and be washed up in Suffolk was in 2012, when one beached at the mouth of the River Ore at Shingle Street, near Hollesley.

It was identified as a juvenile fin whale, which the Cetacean Stranding Investigation Programme said at the time was a "fairly unusual" species to be found beached in the UK.

But bizarrely, another fin whale was found dead on a beach in Norfolk just last October at the Holkham National Nature Reserve.

There were further whale strandings earlier in 2016 at Hunstanton and then Mundesley, which in turn followed a series of incidents around The Wash and across the North Sea.

In 2007, a northern bottlenose whale died after swimming up the river and becoming stranded at the end of Ipswich docks, close to the Orwell Bridge.

  3. What do we know about minke whales?published at 10:01 British Summer Time 22 May 2017

While uncertainty remains over the type of whale that's lying on the beach at Felixstowe, the second whale, on the River Ore near Orford, has been identified as a minke whale.

So what do we know about minke whales? According to Whale-World, external, they're the second smallest of the baleen category:

    • They aren't likely to be more than 35 feet (10m) long or to weigh more than 5.5 tons
    • They feature two blowholes, and are black and white in colour
    • Other characteristics include two flippers that are very long, and a dorsal fin that is small
    • They're not very social, many live alone
    • They have a life expectancy of 50 years, drastically less than most other species of whale (eg a blue whale lives 80-110 years)

  6. Question mark over link between dead whalespublished at 09:18 British Summer Time 22 May 2017

The Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme, external, reporting on the sightings of two dead whales at Felixstowe and Orford, says there's been no confirmed sighting of a third whale off the coast of Harwich.

Writing on its Facebook page last night, the programme said: "There have been a number of media reports of a potential multiple mortality event of minke whales in Suffolk.

"Just to clarify where we actually stand at the moment - a single minke whale was recorded dead stranded near Havergate Island in Suffolk yesterday [Saturday] morning.

"A decomposed baleen whale was also reported stranded at Felixstowe - this is likely to be the body of a dead whale that was reported floating off Harwich on [Saturday] 20 May.

"The species of this whale has not been identified yet.

"A third decomposed whale was also reported floating off the Suffolk coast yesterday [Saturday], but there has been no further confirmation of this sighting as yet.

"The two confirmed stranding events are unlikely to be related given the differing degree of decomposition."

The CSIP hopes to attend the stranded minke whale and the decomposed whale at Felixstowe to collect some samples and to attempt to carry out a field necropsy (a surgical examination of a dead body).

Results will be posted if appropriate.

So, it's not really clear how many whales we are talking about at the moment...
