  6. 'Savage' jailed for eight years for Ipswich stabbingpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 24 May 2017

    A man nicknamed “Savage” has been jailed for eight years after a stabbing in Ipswich in September last year.

    Ahmed Tarabi, 29, of no fixed abode, stabbed Lloyd Fearon once in the upper chest at a property on Prospect Street.

    Mr Fearon, 49, lost more than four litres of blood and needed life-saving surgery. The court heard he is still in constant pain.

    Witnesses told how Tarabi fled the scene after the stabbing but was arrested within 45 minutes of the attack.

    He appeared via videolink from prison to hear the sentence and showed no emotion as judge Rupert Overbury told him the crime was so serious only a custodial sentence was justified.

    Tarabi admitted wounding with intent at an earlier hearing.

    Suffolk cricket coach Andy Northcote believes his players are benefiting hugely from the presence of former Essex batsman Jaik Mickleburgh (pictured) in the squad.

    The 27-year-old hit a century on his debut and was in good form again at the weekend, as Northcote's side made it through to the quarter finals of the Unicorns Trophy, external for the first time since 2014.

    "He's made a massive difference," Northcote told us. "He came in early in the winter and really has helped our younger players."

    "His performances across the summer so far for club and county have been phenomenal."

    Newmarket-based jockey Frankie Dettori believes his horse Cracksman is capable of securing him a third Epsom Derby, external triumph.

    The pair spent time on the track yesterday, as part of their preparations for the classic race a week on Saturday.

    "We've come here to apply the finishing touches and it all went well, like we expected, and we can't wait for the race now," Dettori told BBC Suffolk Sport.

    "The form has worked out really well. He's only had two runs and won twice, although he has still got some improvement in him. We are going there with a live chance."

    He has 118 caps for both Great Britain and England Hockey, and today former Ipswich schoolboy George Pinner (centre) has been named as one of three co-captain's,, external ahead of next month's World Cup qualifiers in London.

    Following Barry Middleton's decision to step down after eight years, Pinner will share duties with Phil Roper (left) and Ian Sloan (right).

    Head Coach Bobby Crutchley described the new structure as "representing the shared responsibility, accountability and ownership of the full squad."

    At 30 years of age, Pinner is the most senior and most capped player of the trio, and has four senior medals to his name, including bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

    The people who own the site where a juvenile whale became stranded and died say they hope it will be removed tomorrow.

    The minke whale was spotted swimming in River Ore estuary before it beached near Orford.

    The land is owned by the New Orford Town Trust which is in the process of arranging its disposal.

    It said it hopes it will be "sometime tomorrow".

    As reported, the whale's body is difficult to access because of deep mud flats. Scientists have so far been unable to carry out a postmortem.

    The fin whale at Felixstowe is being removed today.

    Four men arrested in connection with a fatal stabbing have been bailed.

    Dean Stansby, 41, from Trimley St Mary, died after he was stabbed in the stomach near Ancaster Road, Ipswich, on 8 February.

    Three men, aged 33, 43 and 47, were arrested on suspicion of murder. They have been bailed until August.

    A fourth man, aged 36, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. He was also bailed until August.

    Three others who had previously been arrested have been released with no further action.

    Less then a year ago, nobody could get near the 28-year-old, as he eased his way to an impressive 18 point maximum for the Fen Tigers at Stoke.

    In recent weeks though, the Aylesbury born rider has looked a shadow of his former self, and his struggles continued at the weekend against a Young Lions side at West Row.

    "He's a confidence rider," Fen Tigers co-promoter James Easter told us, "He'll be alright."

    "You often get these guys who can show so much style and speed when they're out in front, but they don't like it when they get roughed up.

    "Form changes, class doesn't. You are in and out of form. But he's a class act and he'll come good."

    Cinema bosses have said audiences are "pushing the boundaries" as they launch two new screens.

    As we've reported, a cinema in Ipswich is set to have an auditorium fully kitted out with so-called motion seats.

    The two screens at Empire Cinemas Ipswich, at the Buttermarket, will open on Friday.

    Both 2D and 3D films can be viewed from the chairs which recline and move.

    Jon Nutton, marketing director at Empire Cinemas, said: "People are pushing the boundaries in terms of how they want to be entertained and this is in response to that."

    He said customers will pay an extra £5 to watch films in the "D-BOX" screens.

    Empire Cinemas Ipswich opened at the end of March.

    Cineworld in Ipswich already has motion seats.

    Film fans are set to have an "immersive" movie experience at a cinema kitted out with seats that move.

    Empire Cinemas Ipswich, based in The Buttermarket, is opening two auditoriums fitted with so-called motion recliners.

    Jean-Francois Gagnon, in the centre of the picture above, from the firm D-BOX which is behind the technology, said: "It gives a different perspective to the movie, the motion is integrated to the narrative and brings that plus value."

    The new screens will open on Friday.

    Cineworld in Ipswich launched a similar "immersive experience, external" last year.

  17. Suffolk Dog Day marks decade with special pollpublished at 11:15 British Summer Time 24 May 2017

    Dog lovers are being asked to vote for their favourite breed as one of the county's annual fixtures marks its 10th anniversary.

    This year's Suffolk Dog Day on 30 July will be held at Helmingham Hall, just north of Ipswich.

    The East AnglianDaily Times, external and BBC Radio Suffolk have joined forces with Suffolk Community Foundation (SCF) to launch live online voting to find out which breeds are the mpst popular in Suffolk.

    The annual event is run by volunteers and all the money goes to SCF to support local charities. So far, £435,000 has been raised.

    Tim Holder, from SCF, said: "This event really is so special. Small local charities really struggle to compete in the fundraising stakes with larger national charities.

    "Suffolk Dog Day was created especially to help them, and the money raised has already made a massive difference to the lives of many vulnerable people here in Suffolk."

  18. Engineering firms to be sentenced at Old Baileypublished at 10:04 British Summer Time 24 May 2017

    Two firms are due to be sentenced after four workers were crushed to death on a building site in Great Yarmouth.

    Daniel Hazelton, 30, his brother Thomas Hazelton, 26, Adam Taylor, 28, and Peter Johnson, 42, were killed when a steel cage they were in collapsed.

    The accident happened at Claxton Engineering Services in January 2011.

    The Hazelton brothers and Mr Johnson were from Stanton, near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, and Mr Taylor was from nearby Rickinghall.

    The company admitted breaching health and safety regulations, as did another firm, Encompass Project Management, and its director.

    Sentencing is expected to last two days.

    Members of the public are being asked to stay away from the area of a beach where a dead whale washed up.

    Suffolk Coastal District Council, external (SCDC) and Suffolk Coastal Norse are currently setting up a cordon to start the process of removing the fin whale carcass.

    The 30ft (9m) dead whale, which cetacean experts said had been struck by a ship out at sea, washed up on Sunday.

    SCDC said they hope to have the job done by midday today.

    They will then start cleaning the beach.

    The council said it is asking the public to stay away from this area for the time being.

    A cordon has been set up to shield the public from the "delicate" removal of a dead whale from a beach.

    Suffolk Coastal District Council (SCDC) is working with Suffolk Coastal Norse to get rid of the fin whale carcass which washed up at Felixstowe on Sunday.

    Due to how decomposed it is, the whale will be disposed of in bins and taken to an abattoir.

    Fiona McConnachie, SCDC communications officer, said hopefully the public will "see none of that".

    She added: "Situations like this don't happen very often. When they do, it's a very sad event. We're hoping we can get it quickly done today."

    SCDC said it had to wait for authorisation from the Marine Management Organisation and organise specialist equipment before it could be removed today.
