    The University of East Anglia (UEA) has been awarded £76,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a project to continue recording the history of Akenfield.

    Akenfield Now follows on from Ronald Blythe's book, Akenfield: Portrait of an English Village, which was published in 1969.

    It depicted life in Suffolk villages based on the recollections of farmers and residents in the 1960s.

    The book became an international bestseller and was turned into a film in 1974.

    The money will see univsersity students helping to make films about life in the area, while school pupils will learn about local heritage by conducting history interviews with members of their community.

    Dr John Gordon from UEA, said: "We are confident the project will support young people to explore, understand and interpret their local heritage with pride.

    "They will learn many new skills to inform their study in school and for life beyond.

    "We especially look forward to meeting residents of the 'Akenfield' villages and learning about how the community has changed since it was presented in book and film."

  5. Army helicopter contract will 'support' Suffolk jobspublished at 11:46 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon has announced a six-year, £48m Apache helicopter training contract.

    The investment in air and ground crew will support around 70 jobs at Aviation Training International, which has bases in Suffolk - at Wattisham, near Ipswich - as well as Hampshire and Dorset.

    About 700 Army personnel will go through the training scheme per year including pilots and ground crew.

    Sir Michael Fallon said: "This £48m contract will support UK jobs and provide world-class Apache training for our personnel.

    "The Apache is a vital part of the British Army's fighting force that is helping to keep this country safe."

    Ipswich Town, external striker Joe Garner believes his new club can follow Huddersfield's lead by following up a disappointing season with one that ends in the play-offs.

    The Terriers were recently promoted to the Premier League having finished 19th in the Championship a year earlier.

    Town will be trying to improve on their 16th place finish when the new campaign kicks off on 5 August.

    "It's a tough, tough league and there'll be three quarters of the league thinking they can push up into the play-offs, and hopefully nick into the Premier League, and I think we'll be one of them."

    "We'll work hard through pre-season and buy into what the gaffer wants to do," Garner told BBC Suffolk.

    Ipswich Town's, external new striker Joe Garner didn't think twice about joining the Blues after hearing of boss Mick McCarthy's plans for the club.

    The 29-year-old left Rangers, one of the biggest clubs in Britain, to sign for Town a couple of weeks ago.

    "It wasn't a tough decision," Garner told BBC Suffolk. "Once I heard I could come here I spoke to the gaffer about his ideas and I'm really excited to be here and am looking forward to it.

    "I spoke to a few clubs to be fair but once I spoke to the gaffer here it was where I wanted to come. I'll get the family down, as it's a lovely place to live, and I'll just crack on with my football now."

    Ed Sheeran has announced his 2018 UK and European stadium tour but, sadly, he won't be coming home as part of it.

    It kicks off in Cork on 4 May and ends in Warsaw on 11 August - with two dates at Wembley Stadium on 15 and 16 June.

    Tickets go on sale on 8 July.

    So, no gig at Portman Road.

    The 26-year-old, who grew up near Framlingham, has previously said he would love to one day perform at the home of Ipswich Town Football Club.

  10. Ed Sheeran announces UK and European datespublished at 09:54 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    He teased it yesterday with a rather inappropriate picture involving a cake in his own image and now Ed Sheeran has announced a stadium tour of the UK, Ireland and Europe.

    He'll be taking his show to cities including Belfast, Dublin, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle and London in May next year.

    So plenty of time to plan.

  11. A14 multi-vehicle crash latestpublished at 09:48 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Here's the latest on the crash on the A14 near Newmarket we told you about earlier.

    Police say it happened at about 07:30 westbound at junction 36 for Nine Mile Hill and involved a car and a lorry.

    They add it "doesn't look like any injuries" have been incurred.

    All lanes are now open, but delays are still expected in the area.

    Suffolk hockey player Harry Martin has been telling us how pleased he was to end the World League Semi-Final, external on a positive note.

    The 24-year-old scored twice as England beat Malaysia 4-1 on Sunday, just a day after losing 2-0 to the Netherlands in the last-four.

    "I think we showed a lot of character to bounce back and finish with a positive result against a Malaysia team that had done well throughout the tournament.

    "It's always nice to get on the scoresheet," said Martin. "I'd been due a few but they were my first of the tournament so it was probably about time, but mainly as a team it was nice to finish on a high."

  15. Crash victim's family 'disillusioned' with killer's sentencepublished at 09:04 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    As we reported yesterday, a man has been jailed for seven years for a fatal hit-and-run crash near Mildenhall last year.

    Nelson Curtis, 64, from The High Street, Lakenheath, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

    Police said he had been drinking heavily before the crash and was driving at more than 100mph.

    Lauren Danks, 22, from Soham in Cambridgeshire, was found dead at the scene of the crash on the A11 at Red Lodge in the early hours of 11 November.

    Ch Insp David Giles, from Suffolk Police, said her family were "absolutely disillusioned" with the length of sentence passed.

    He said: "This collision which led to the death of a young woman was reckless almost beyond belief.

    "To drive a car at such excessive speed, having consumed a large amount of alcohol shows a total and utter disregard for everybody else on the road.

    "Failure to stop and report the collision compounded the distress of those affected."

    A yellow weather warning for Norfolk remains in place although the heavy rain will gradually move northwards as drier but still mainly cloudy conditions follow from the south.

    A top temperature of 19C - that's 66F. It will be chillier on the Norfolk coast.
