    Steve Martin
    BBC Radio Suffolk

A surgery in Lowestoft has been told it's not providing safe, effective and well-led services.

Kirkley Mill surgery on Clifton Road was rated as inadequate and put in special measures, following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission.

It was also found to be breaking regulations by not having a safe and proper management of medicines.

Health bosses from East Coast Community Healthcare and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group said they were very disappointed by the findings.

They said they have already addressed some of the issues highlighted by the inspectors and will work to make further improvements to Kirkley Mill, which is "in one of the most deprived areas in the east of England".

The fixture is likely to attract a decent crowd at Ram Meadow, ahead of Bury's opening match in the Bostik South on Saturday week.

"The Ipswich boys will be incredibly fit as they train every day," said Bury Town manager Ben Chenery (pictured).

"We look forward to fixtures like this. It's great for our players to play against better opposition and football league opposition.

"So far in pre-season we've been having some good results, born out of being fitter.

"We're building towards the 12th of August and I have to take great heart from how fit my players are and their understanding of what I require."

The 27-year-old has averaged close to 150 during the county's most encouraging campaign in years, but he still appears to be no closer to earning a first class contract further up the cricket ladder.

"I spoke to a few counties over the winter and nothing came from that," Mickleburgh told us. "Since then, Suffolk have given me the opportunity to go out and score runs, but again, I've not heard of any interest.

"It's very much a case of wait and see. All I can do is keep scoring runs so that is my main focus."

Suffolk's final fixture of the season away at Bedfordshire gets under way on Sunday 13 August.

There are three separate development applications up for consideration at East Bergholt.

The first is for 144 homes and four business units on land north west of Moores Lane; the second is for 10 single-storey buildings for the over 55s on Hadleigh Road; and the third is for outline planning for up to 75 homes, a pre-school and a neighbourhood hub with a swimming pool, office space and local shop to the east of Constable Country Medical Centre.

Babergh District Council officers have recommended the schemes for approval.

Residents in the village - which has a population of about 3,000 people - have been fighting the plans for a number of years.

    Kelly McCormack
    BBC Radio Suffolk

Villagers at East Bergholt will learn later today whether plans to build more than 200 new homes will get the go-ahead.

The proposal - which involves three separate applictions - has sparked considerable opposition.

Residents and parish councils have written hundreds of letters opposing the plans, citing traffic pressure on the A12 and the road to Hadleigh, as well as fearing the GP surgery and other local services won't be able to cope.

    East Bergholt

Some people in East Bergholt have even threatened to "divorce" Suffolk in the row, claiming bordering planning authority Colchester Borough Council in Essex is well known for its preservation of heritage sites.

The village is famous for being artist John Constable's birthplace.

A decision on its future will be taken by Babergh district councillors later today - the plans have been recommended for approval.

    Steve Martin
    BBC Radio Suffolk

Ipswich Borough Council was already mid-way through a £1.4m programme of improvements at Cumberland Towers before the disastrous fire at Grenfell Towers in London.

Last year, boilers were replaced in the sheltered accommodation block's 69 flats - this year it is replacing windows, enclosing open balconies, replacing doors and carrying out external thermal insulation cladding.

Housing portfolio holder Neil MacDonald said all the cladding has been fire tested.

He said: "As the scaffolding is in place already, we hope to finish the existing work and start the new work installing the sprinkler system straightaway."

But he added: "I don't believe Cumberland Towers is at any greater risk of going up in fire now than it has been in the last 40 years since it was built."

The 12 storey, 69-flat sheltered housing scheme is the only council-owned tower block in Ipswich.

Mr MacDonald, who is Ipswich Borough Council's portfolio holder for housing, said he hoped work on installing the almost £185,000 sprinkler system would start later this year.

Suffolk's cricketers had to settle for a fourth draw from five Unicorns Championship, external fixtures this season, as the rain put paid to any chances of a win against Cumberland yesterday.

Suffolk's cricketers in action at Ipswich School

After setting the away side a victory target of 304, Cumberland had moved on to 163 for 5 when the match was eventually called off.

The result leaves Suffolk trailing leaders Lincolnshire by 23 points with just one round of fixtures remaining.

Opening batsman Jaik Mickleburgh, who was twice dismissed in the nineties at Ipswich School, told us it was another frustrating end to the match.

"I thought we'd set the game up quite nicely," he said. "Scoring was difficult on this pitch and the standard of bowling has been pretty decent."

"Without the rain we'd have definitely fancied ourselves to get the wickets we needed given the overs we had left, but the weather's played a big part."

Andy Northcote's side needed to defeat Cumberland to stand any hope of overhauling leaders Lincolnshire at the top of the table, but his bowlers lost 18 overs to the wet weather either side of tea.

Earlier, opening batsman Jaik Mickleburgh was dismissed for 99 - the second time in the match he had fallen just short of a century - as Suffolk set Cumberland 304 to win in a minimum of 69 overs.

The visitors were 163 for 5 when the captains agreed to call the match off as a draw.

Suffolk took 11 points from the match and Cumberland 10 points, leaving Suffolk fourth in the table heading into the final round of fixtures.
