    Police are appealing for help after a prisoner with links to Kent and Surrery absconded from Hollesley Bay prison.

    Staff doing a roll call at 17:00 yesterday realised Mark Heanan was missing - and reported his absence to the police.

    The six ft (1.82m) 30-year-old was last seen wearing a blue polo shirt, khaki shorts and black flip-flops. He has a tattoo on the left side of his neck.

    Heanan (below) is serving an indeterminate sentence for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm at the Category D men's prison near Woodbridge.

    Suffolk Police are warning people not to approach him.

    Mildenhall Fen Tigers, external are in pole position to progress from their Knockout Cup Speedway tie with Stoke, after enjoying a big win in the opening leg of their replay at West Row last night.

    The meeting finished 57-33 in favour of the Suffolk side, with Connor Mountain (pictured) top scoring.

    Mountain was paid for 14 points on the night and was backed up well by the rest of the team, with six of Mildenhall's seven riders enjoying heat wins.

    "The lads put on another fine show tonight and at the moment look so professional and organised at home," said Fen Tigers Chairman Kevin Jolly.

    "I am very pleased with a 24 point lead and although we will not be complacent in the second leg, I am expecting us to do a professional job and go through to the semi finals."

    Airman Corrie Mckeague, based at RAF Honington, disappeared in the early hours of 24 September last year after a night out in Bury St Edmunds.

    Police had been searching a landfill site at Milton, near Cambridge, following a theory that Mr Mckeague may have been taken by a rubbish truck after sleeping in a bin.

    But they called off the search on 21 July having found no trace of him.

    Today they have announced that material found at an incinerator in Great Blakenham, near Ipswich, needs further examination to see whether it is linked to him.

    Suffolk police have today announced that material found at an incinerator at Great Blakenham, near Ipswich (pictured), needs further examination to see if it is linked to missing airman Corrie Mckeague.

    It was on the afternoon of 21 July that officers announced their decision to end their search for missing RAF Honington serviceman Mr Mckeague at a landfill site at Milton, near Cambridge.

    At the same time, officers said their search "remains a live and active investigation" and that their work to locate Mr Mckeague remained ongoing.

    "This will include work to search preserved waste that was incinerated to see if this will establish if there are any further clues as to what happened to Corrie," a spokesman said.

    "This incinerated waste will be subject to examination and where necessary forensic analysis in the coming weeks."

    Isolated showers will die away to leave a mostly dry night with clear spells, and high cloud.

    Staying mild, with temperatures falling to 11C (52F).

    There'll be some bright spells tomorrow, but thickening cloud will bring patchy outbreaks of rain which will turn heavier and more persistent.

    South-westerly winds will freshen and become blustery by evening.

  10. Corrie Mckeague: Statement from police on incinerator wastepublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

    Suffolk police have issued statement in relation to the on-going search for RAF Honington serviceman Corrie Mckeague.

    A spokesman said: “Police searching incinerated waste at the Great Blakenham energy-from-waste facility have recovered some material that requires further examination in order to establish whether it is in any way connected to the Corrie Mckeague missing person inquiry.

    "At this stage it cannot be confirmed whether or not this material is in any way linked to Corrie and so it will be subject to specialist examination and forensic analysis in the coming weeks.

    "Police expected that it would be necessary to take items recovered from the search away from the site in order to examine them more carefully.

    "Corrie’s family have been kept updated about the search. The search of the incinerated waste is now complete.”

    Hollywood actor Bryan Cranston, star of the drama series Breaking Bad, external, visited RAFs Lakenheath, external and Mildenhall over the weekend as part of his USO (United Service Organisation, external) tour of Europe.

    "It's been an illuminating experience for me," said Cranston.

    "I've always been very proud of the service of the military men and women, but we don't have too much of an opportunity to exchange thoughts and ideas.

    "I wanted to convey the sentiment that I feel and that most of the people of the United States feel, and that is an appreciation for the service they've given, the sacrifice that they give and the amount of hours they put in - it's really remarkable and appreciated."

    At RAF Mildenhall, external, the award-winning actor met airmen and their families before touring the base, dining with airmen and making a visit to the 352nd Special Operations Maintenance Group.

    He said the start of his USO tour has seen his high level of respect for servicemen and women grow "exponentially", adding "I have a level of sincerity, kindness and honor in these young men and women that really made me feel better about the younger generation.

    "I saw real, courteous people who are interested and dedicated to their work."

  12. Passengers warned over essential rail upgrade workpublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

    Rail passengers travelling on the Norwich to London line are warned to pre-plan journeys, external this month.

    Upgrade work is being carried out, particularly during the bank holiday weekend on Sunday 27 and Monday 28 August.

    Overhead wires, installed in the 1950s, are being replaced. In hot weather these can sag, leading to speed restrictions to prevent damage from trains.

    Network Rail said the new wires were controlled by a system of weights which kept them taut at all times so fewer train journeys were delayed.

    It's the first leg of their Knock-Out Cup quarter-final replay after the first staging ended 90-90.

    Mildenhall co-promoter James Easter said: "Stoke went very well at West Row the last time, but we were very weak and we've now got two of our better riders back, with our top five very strong.

    "I'd be looking at getting a 15, maybe 18 (point lead), I wouldn't like to have just 10 because on their home track they are a bit of a problem."

  14. Teenager passes driving test during 2,000-mile road trippublished at 13:40 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

    A Lowestoft teenager who took his driving theory test on his 17th birthday on 24 July, then set off to drive more than 2,000 miles (3,200 km) to all four corners of the UK for charity, has taken his practical test while on his epic trip - and passed.

    William Neesham, pictured before setting off, took his test in Bolton yesterday.

    He told us: "We actually spent the morning in Bolton trying to learn some of the roads and stuff but that was definitely the most challenging part of it [the test]."

    Asked if he passed with flying colours, William modestly replied: "Of course", revealing he'd had one "minus" for a late signal.

    Passing his test means William's journey, raising money for the Louise Hamilton Trust, can now be completed more easily as he can now drive on motorways as well as A and B roads.

    "It's going to be a lot quicker and a lot smoother to get places," he said.

  16. Trial holes dug ahead of Lake Lothing Third Crossingpublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

    Tests to finalise the detailed design for the Lake Lothing Third Crossing are taking place in Lowestoft, with contractors digging trial holes and boreholes on land and in the water.

    The investigation works, which could last up to three months, are costing in the region of £600,000.

    The findings will help finalise the detailed design for the new bridge piers and foundations, says Suffolk County Council.

    The leader of Waveney District Council, Mark Bee, said: "We are delighted that real progress is being made in the development of the new crossing for Lowestoft and this is another important step in the right direction.

    "The new bridge will provide relief for traffic going through the town and a huge amount of effort is going in to ensuring that construction is able to take place on budget and on time."

    Land-based work is taking place between 08:00 and 18:00, work in the water will continue during the night, and any work required on pavements and roads will be carried out during off-peak hours to minimise disruption.

    Five high-speed theme park rides have been shut across the UK after a death on a similar attraction in the US.

    Four of the rides closed are in theme parks at Brean Theme Park in Somerset, Lightwater Valley in North Yorkshire (pictured), Pleasurewood Hills in Suffolk and Coney Beach in South Wales.

    The fifth ride is owned by Joseph Manning in Herefordshire.

    I'm here in Rigbourne Hill in Beccles, at the scene of a fire earlier today which claimed the life of one of the residents of the property.

    It's understood the fire may have started in a first-floor bedroom.

    The couple who live there were taken out, and although they were both treated at the scene, a woman, thought to be in her 70s, later died.

    Neighbours have told me the couple have lived here for at least 40 years and were very well known, and they have expressed their shock and their sadness at what has happened.

    The ambulance service has told us several crews attended the fire and treated two casualties but that one patient died at the scene.

    A man was taken to the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston to be treated for smoke inhalation and burns.

    This was the scene a few moments ago of the fatal house fire in Rigbourne Hill, Beccles.

    Suffolk Fire Service says crews rescued two people from the house, and gave them first aid before handing them over to ambulance personnel.

    Ipswich heavyweight Fabio Wardley has been telling us how much he's learnt in his first year as a professional and that 2018 is going to be a big year for him.

    After winning his first two pro bouts the 22-year-old is hoping to squeeze in a third fight before 2017 is over.

    "We definitely want to get one more done and then we're going to look at what we can attack next year and how we can make a serious impact," he said.

    "I've used 2017 to find my feet, touching base with some things and seeing how everything works. I've settled into it now and definitely want to push on.

    "There's a lot of things where I feel I've improved and I'm a lot more comfortable and everything seems to be coming off as we want it to."
