  1. Number of EU nurses leaving West Suffolk Hospital trebles since Brexitpublished at 08:34 British Summer Time 19 September 2017

    The West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds has seen the number of EU nurses leaving their jobs treble in the 12 months after the EU Referendum, compared to the previous year.

    Forty four EU nationals have resigned, up from 14 in the 12-month period before voters went to the polls in the EU Referendum.

    The figures come as the health service has excess vacancies of nearly 4,000 in the East region alone.

    Ipswich Hospital has not seen any increase in EU health workers leaving the NHS.

    The rain overnight has left a legacy in some spots of a little bit of mist and one or two fog patches as well, but we should see plenty of sunny spells and it'll be mostly dry.

    We've still got one or two showers, particularly out towards parts of Norfolk, but they should clear pretty quickly.

    Elsewhere we have decent sunny spells.

    There'll be a bit of fair weather cloud bubbling up this afternoon and temperatures will reach about 16C (61F).

    Expect more showers this evening with some maybe heavy but most places should be dry by morning.

    Overnight temperatures will vary significantly and depend on how much cloud cover there is, 7C to 10C (45F-50F) is expected under cloudy skies but where we get any breaks we could see something as low as 3C (37F).

    Mist and fog patches are also likely.

    Tuesday will see any overnight mist and fog eventually clearing to leave a largely dry day with highs of around 18C (64F).

    You can tell the Christmas season is just around the corner when theatre's release the details of their pantomime.

    The Marina Theatre in Lowestoft has launched this year's panto which stars former member of '90s boyband A1 Mark Read and former MP and Strictly contestant Anne Widdecombe.

    She said: "What I really enjoy about pantomime is that for four weeks all you hear is the sound of kids laughing.

    "They love it and they get so excited, it's wonderful... it's so relaxing - it isn't Shakespeare. If you mess up a line, it's not going to throw everything."

    Aladdin runs from 13 December to 1 January, external.

  7. Two men jailed in connection with more than 50 burglariespublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 18 September 2017

    Two men from Leicester have been jailed for a total of 13 years after admitting a series of more than 50 burglaries across seven counties, including Suffolk and Norfolk.

    Lee Heane, 27, pictured left, of Radford Drive and Matthew Bryan, 25, of Glenhills Boulevard were sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court for seven years and six years respectively.

    The burglaries took place between November 2016 and February 2017. The locations in the East of England were:

    • Lavenham, Pakenham and Hadleigh in Suffollk
    • Hingham, Costessey and Thetford (x2) in Norfolk

    Thousands of pounds-worth of jewellery and a large quantity of cash were stolen during the burglaries, as well as three shotguns and cartridges from the Hadleigh property.

    The Ipswich Witches will be taking on the Edinburgh Monarchs without Cameron Heeps in the play-off semi-finals.

    The rider is yet to recover from a shoulder injury picked up against Peterborough so Mason Campton will guest.

    Team manager Ritchie Hawkins (pictured) told the club website, external: "We are going into the play-offs in a totally different situation to last year.

    "Last year it was pressure, pressure, pressure every meeting for two months leading up to it.

    "This year has been fairly comfortable and it has been a case of enjoying ourselves."

    The first leg takes place at Foxhall on Thursday.

  9. Night closures to begin on Orwell Bridgepublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 18 September 2017

    The Orwell Bridge is going to be closed between 21:00 and 05:00 every week night from today until Saturday 8 October.

    The closures are due to an ongoing inspection of the 35-year-old structure.

    A diversion will take traffic between junctions for Copdock and Seven Hills around the north of Ipswich.

    Highways England are carrying out the work to ensure the bridge remains in good condition.

    A Lowestoft man has admitted viewing indecent images on the internet, despite being banned from doing so.

    Nathan Coleman, 24, of Suffolk Road, had been using an internet search engine which gave him anonymity so his partner wouldn't see his search history.

    Convicted in 2013 of downloading illegal images he was given a suspended prison sentence. This has now expired, although he was still the subject of a sexual offences prevention order, external.

    When police made an unannounced visit to his home in April, they found a tablet computer hidden under the bed.

    An internet page left open showed he had been viewing fictional stories about underage children and bestiality.

    Magistrates in Great Yarmouth were told they don't have sufficient sentencing powers to deal with Coleman and have referred the case to Ipswich Crown Court for sentencing.

  11. Unveiling commemorates birth of Victoria Cross soldierpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 18 September 2017

    A paving stone, commemorating 100 years since a Suffolk-born soldier was awarded the Victoria Cross, has been unveiled in Copdock.

    William Henry Hewitt grew up in the village, but spent most of his life in South Africa.

    He led a successful attack on an enemy pillbox near Ypres on 20 September 1917, getting injured several times in the process.

    Jennifer Jones, the village recorder for Copdock, says the stone will be a new focus for the village: "Our war memorial is at the church, and that's half-a-mile away on the other side of the old A12.

    "The headteacher has already said that on Remembrance Day, the children will come down here, and place the poppy crosses down here, so it's going to become a centre of remembrance, which is lovely for the whole village."

  12. Rail improvements to take place at weekends and over Christmaspublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 18 September 2017

    Rail passengers are being warned that upgrades for the Crossrail project, external and work to install new overhead wires on the line between Norwich and London, will take place at weekends from October to December with a 10-day closure at Christmas.

    Network Rail’s engineers will spend the equivalent of 20,000 hours replacing more than six miles (10km) of overhead wire at Ilford as part of a £250m project to upgrade the wiring system on the mainline.

    Once this work is complete the stretch from Chelmsford to Seven Kings will have had the new wire installed resulting in fewer delays, the company says.

    Jamie Burles, from Greater Anglia, said: "We will make sure that customers can complete their journeys during all periods of engineering works, even if part of it is by bus."

    Passengers are advised to check how their journey will be affected at National Rail, external, or with their train operator ahead of travelling.

  13. Ipswich Town: Knudsen set to return at Elland Roadpublished at 12:25 British Summer Time 18 September 2017

    Ipswich Town's, external latest defensive injury isn't anything serious and Jonas Knudsen should be available to play at Leeds on Saturday, according to boss Mick McCarthy.

    The 25-year-old (pictured left) was a surprise absentee from the side that beat Bolton on Saturday, because of a hamstring problem.

    "He went out and tried to train on Tuesday but he felt it when he had to stop and start, so he was never going to be fit," McCarthy said.

    "I know I didn't tell anyone on Friday at my press conference, but I don't see why I should give anyone we're playing against a heads-up on what the team is likely to be. He'll be alright for Leeds I think."

    Fellow defenders Luke Chambers, Tommy Smith and Adam Webster have also missed games this season.

  14. Charity reveals it's helped 900 sexually abused children in five yearspublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 18 September 2017

    An Ipswich charity says they've had cases of children as young as three-year-old who've been sexually abused.

    As "Fresh Starts - New Beginnings, external" marks its fifth anniversary, it says they've supported 900 children, but there are still about 50 who have suffered abuse and need the charity's help, who are on the waiting list.

    Founder and chief executive Diana Porter said: "I don't think more abuse is happening, I think more children are coming forward and that is a very very positive thing.

    "We've actually had six children under three-years-of age being referred to us, up to those over 18.

    "Most of them have been abused by someone they know - about 95% will have been a very close relation or very close friend that has abused them."
