    Ipswich Town, external skipper Luke Chambers has responded to Norwich forward Nelson Oliveira's claim that he'll be playing for the "better club" in Sunday's East Anglian derby.

    The Portuguese (pictured) made the comments to the Eastern Daily Press, external earlier this week.

    "Obviously he's new to playing over here and hasn't read the history books," Chambers told me.

    "In the short term they've been in the Premier League, but you only have to look above the badge on our shirt to see where we're at [three stars representing the Blues' league title, FA Cup and UEFA Cup wins].

    "Someone like him is not going to have any effect on what we're thinking towards the game.

    "I've played against him a few times and he's got a lot to say for himself, so we'll see where we're at come 2 o'clock on Sunday."

    One westbound lane of the A14 remains closed between junction 47 (A1088 Woolpit) and junction 46 (Thurston Road) due to emergency repairs and accident investigation work following a vehicle fire shortly after 08:00.

    It's likely to remain closed for most of the day, with resurfacing work being carried out overnight.

    A pensioner is in hospital with serious internal head injuries following a car crash in Mendlesham Green.

    The man, who's in his 70s, was driving a black Renault Megane convertible northbound on a rural road between Saxham Street and Gipping when it left the road on a bend, and landed in a ditch opposite.

    The incident happened at around 12:45.

    Anyone with information is asked to contact Suffolk Police.

  7. Ipswich family's 'huge disappointment' after optometrist court rulingpublished at 12:08 British Summer Time 19 October 2017

    The family of a eight-year-old boy who died say they are "hugely disappointed, confused and further disillusioned" following the final court ruling in the Honey Rose optometrist case.

    Ms Rose, 36, of Newham in east London, was initially convicted of gross negligence manslaughter for failing to diagnose a condition in Vincent Barker's eyes which indicated fluid on his brain.

    She was working at Boot's in Ipswich in 2012.

    Ms Rose was given a suspended sentence, but the verdict was quashed at the Court of Appeal in July this year.

    The Crown Prosecution Service then applied for the case to be taken to the Supreme Court,

    As we reported earlier this week, a Court of Appeal judge refused to do this.

    The family of Vincent Barker, known as Vinnie, have now released a statement via Suffolk Police in which they say they've "lost all faith in a justice system" which they believed could fairly distinguish guilt and innocence.

    The decision of the courts, said Jo and Ian Barker, "further blurs the criminal benchmark for professional cases of neglect, medical or otherwise, that result in death".

    They said: "Heartbreakingly for us that means our little boy's case now allows individuals to be less accountable and eradicates the gravity of the message to healthcare practitioners and other professionals, that clear breaches of their duty of care, that contribute to death, could result in a conviction of gross negligence manslaughter."

    The statement continues by saying the have no option but to accept the final ruling of the courts.

  8. Patient safety 'not compromised' by high demandpublished at 11:42 British Summer Time 19 October 2017

    More now on our story of the two Norfolk hospitals which had to bring in extra beds because of high demand.

    A BBC investigation has shown that the Queen Elizabeth in King's Lynn and the James Paget University Hospital (JPUH) in Gorleston had 100% of their beds occupied in the past three months.

    Graham Wilde, chief executive of the JPUH, says patient safety hasn't been compromised.

    While he didn't say much on stage last night on stage and may have struggled to get to grips with the pre-awards meal, Ed Sheeran did stop for a quick chat on the red carpet.

    After basically winning music this year, he told 6 Music's Abbie McCarthy that he's set to appear in an upcoming episode of cult US TV cartoon series The Simpsons.

    Ed will play Lisa's new love interest Brendan.

    The singer, who also recently showcased his acting skills as a traveling troubadour in Game of Thrones, external, didn't know when it was due to go to air but did have a clear idea about which show he wants to be on next.

  10. Ex-Anglia TV presenter 'sexually abused as a child'published at 11:07 British Summer Time 19 October 2017

    The television presenter, Helen McDermott, has revealed she was sexually abused by a family friend when she was 12 years old.

    "I was sexually abused by a member from the church... this is the first time I've ever mentioned it, it was something that you never talked about, I thought it was my fault," said Ms McDermott, who is a former presenter on television with Anglia TV and Mustard TV and on BBC Radio Norfolk.

    "I was picked up, it was a friend of the family... I would never have talked about this until now, it has affected me all my life, there's no question about that."

    Ms McDermott has spoken out, as part of the hashtag Me Too campaign, which has gained momentum after allegations of rape and sexual assault against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein surfaced.

    The Flying Scotsman remains in Peterborough this morning so repair works can continue.

    The locomotive developed a fault yesterday during a "Cathedrals Express" trip between Ely and Norwich.

    The company behind the tour, Steam Dreams Rail, say it was due to a fault in the "hot axle box".

    "It's not currently clear if the fault will be fixed in time for the trips on Saturday," they added.

    The train is due to travel from Norwich to Ipswich and back on Saturday morning, then from Norwich to London King's Cross in the afternoon.

    Whatever happens the trips will take place, but with "an alternative steam locomotive" if the Flying Scotsman can't be fixed in time, they company explained.

    Despite nursing a broken elbow, wrist and rib, musical trooper Ed Sheeran still managed to somehow slip into his favourite red and black plaid shirt and stroll down to the Q Awards at the Roundhouse in Camden, London to collect his award for best act in the world today.

    The singer-songwriter, who was knocked off his bicycle by a car on Monday, received his award from Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams - aka Arya Stark.

    "Usually, I’d say let’s give a hand to our winner..." she joked.

    Ed kept his award speech short and sweet with a humble thanks.

    Elsewhere on the night, returning rock 'n' roll hero Liam Gallagher picked up two awards for best live act and icon, while Stormzy was awarded best solo artist.

    We'll have more on them later.

    After the awards ceremony, the tables were cleared away for a gig by Sleaford Mods, whose film Bunch of Kunst also collected an award, and a career-spanning set from headliners the Manic Street Preachers, who won the inspiration award.

    Anyone still at the bar/toilet when the Welsh rockers came on stage will have had to make a mad dash back for set opener and indie anthem Motorcycle Emptiness.

  17. Terry Butcher releases tribute to his sonpublished at 09:19 British Summer Time 19 October 2017

    The former Ipswich Town footballer Terry Butcher has released a statement following the death of his son earlier this week.

    Christopher Butcher, 35, a former Army captain who had served in Afghanistan, died on Monday morning.

    The family tribute says he was a "formidable and true friend and a remarkable, loyal leader and soldier".

    It added: "He always put others before himself and was a true and trusted brother-in-arms.

    "His life has been so tragically cut short, but we will cherish and treasure the memories we all shared, forever."

    The Butcher family have also thanked people for the overwhelming messages of support.
