  3. 'Innovative' service frees up hospital bedspublished at 17:46 British Summer Time 17 October 2017

    West Suffolk Hospital

If a patient at the hospital in Bury St Edmunds is ready to leave, but needs a county council-provided care package in place, they can only go home if it's all set up.

If it's not set up, then it's referred to as hospital bed-blocking or "delayed transfer of care".

The hospital now provides the home care for up to seven days, to plug any gaps until council care is ready.

Dr Stephen Dunn says this has been a set up with the help of the council: "This is not a failing of the county council, this is something we've worked on jointly together.

"It's hugely innovative and it's a great opportunity to try and fill the gaps that sometimes arise in the care market."

  7. Quashing of optometrist's conviction to standpublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 17 October 2017

The acquittal of an optometrist who was convicted over the death of an eight-year-old Ipswich boy will stand, after judges refused to send the case to the Supreme Court.

    Honey Rose

Honey Rose, 36, was initially given a suspended sentence after she failed to diagnose an eye condition which ultimately led to the death of Vincent Barker in July 2012.

She had examined him during a routine eye test at a branch of Boots in Ipswich five months earlier.

Ms Rose, of Newham, east London, was convicted of gross negligence manslaughter at Ipswich Crown Court in August 2016, but the verdict was quashed in July of this year at the Court of Appeal.

The prosecution applied to take the case to the Supreme Court, citing an issue of "public importance" which needed to be considered by leading judges.

They argued that the law on gross negligence manslaughter was not "satisfactorily clear" as it stood.

But at another hearing today at the Court of Appeal, which lasted less than a minute, Sir Brian Leveson declined to send the case on to the country's most senior judges.

Alec and Diana Mayhew have kept owls at their home near Leiston for about 25 years, but on Friday two of their birds went AWOL, external.

Mr Mayhew said Misty, now safely back in his aviary, seemed to be very hungry after his adventure : "I put some food on the aviary floor, he was straight down on it.

"He ate it all, and half an hour later, he was on his perch, sound asleep.

"It's only now he's beginning to wake up and look like his old self. Basically he'd been eight days without food, and that's eight days without water as well.

"They get their moisture from food, owls don't normally drink water, although occasionally you get one that might."

It's feared Dawn has only got another six to seven days to return home, otherwise she'll "just lay down somewhere and die", added Mr Mayhew.
