    Officers investigate good Samaritan-turned-rapist

    Police are warning that a rapist who attacked a woman in Lowestoft after offering her a lift home could attack again.

    They have also revealed that the man - who at first had appeared to be a good Samaritan to his victim - may have picked up other people first.

    Detectives say witnesses have come forward to say they were also approached by a man whose appearance matches the description given by the victim. Officers have now issued an E-fit of the man they want to question.

    Ollie Smith threw caution to the wind for the 37-34 loss - asking his team to play a higher intensity, more attack-minded game, and he was really pleased with how well they adapted.

    "I was basically saying the shackles are off," he told me. "In general I prefer to be quite methodical and conservative in the way we play, to a point.

    "I prefer to edge on the side of caution but we didn't feel that was the right way to approach the game, so we went all out attack and we do take lots of confidence from it."

    Plans to redevelop Ipswich's Cornhill have been given the green light.

    However, a decision by the borough council to invest an additional £200,000, as we reported yesterday, depends on it being match-funded.

    A spokesman for the council said: "A contractor will soon be appointed, but some details of the £3.6m scheme have yet to be finalised because of costs."

    Work is set to start early next year with completion before Christmas.

  4. Rape suspect 'gave lifts to other people' before attackpublished at 13:52 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2017

    Officers investigating a rape in Lowestoft at the weekend say they have heard from witnesses who were given a lift by a man in the town shortly before he raped a woman in her 30s.

    The victim was offered a lift by a man at about 04:00 on Saturday, while walking along Oulton Road. She accepted, but he then stopped the car on Kimberley Road and attacked her.

    The driver told the victim he had just given a lift to two other people.

    Det Insp Eamonn Bridger said police want to hear from anyone who has information about the attack, "especially if you believe you recognise the man pictured in the E-fit".

    The number of complaints being made to Suffolk police has reached its highest level for a decade.

    Figures released ahead of a meeting of the police and crime commissioner on Friday show an increase of 26%, from 152 complaints recorded in Q1-Q2 in 2016-17 to 191 in the same period this year.

    Chief constable Gareth Wilson said: "The numbers are still relatively low, so we're not talking about huge numbers.

    "The deputy, as part of his role, constantly analyses it. We've got a system where if there's a particular team, or if there's a particular member of staff, we make sure we deal with it effectively as well.

    "Yes there has been a quarterly increase, but it's not a trend now that I'm overly concerned about, but I will give people absolute assurance that we deal with it really seriously."

    A campaign which began about 18 months ago to purchase the former Southwold Hospital for community use has been successful.

    Waveney councillors approved the project last night, which includes nine dwellings and an opportunity for a library, creche and business centre.

    Laurence Vulliamy, chairman of SouthGen - a "community benefit society" set up by Save Our Southwold, externalto buy and run the site - said it was "very happy" at the unanimous decision.

    The group's plans involve restoring the facade and sides of the 1903 building and extending it.

    On-loan winger Bersant Celina has told BBC Suffolk Sport his exploits with Ipswich Town, external this season aren't going unnoticed at his parent club Manchester City.

    The 21-year-old's been in impressive form for the Blues, scoring seven goals in 19 appearances so far.

    Although Celina hasn't had any direct contact with City boss Pep Guardiola, he knows the runaway Premier League leaders are monitoring him.

    "He [Guardiola] has to think about his players that he's got there, but I'm in contact with his team. I know they're supporting me and watching me and want me to do well.

    "I think I've done the right thing, to go out and play games. You look at the team there and it's just amazing. Obviously it's hard to get in it, but that's for the future I think."

    Suffolk Police say there will come a point when they say they have carried out all the lines of inquiry that they can into the disappearance of RAF Honington airman Corrie Mckeague - but they have not reached it yet.

    They have now stopped their second search of a landfill site at Milton near Cambridge as part of their inquiry into his disappearance more than a year ago.

    However, they say investigations will continue.

    A male who was discovered under a school bus in Chelmondiston, which had just returned from the continent, has been passed into the care of social services, after he told police he was from Sudan, and under the age of 18.

    "We are glad the children are all safe and well, and the school is co-operating with the police."

    Police told us earlier they were called at 10:50 following reports the man had been found, as the East Anglian Daily Times has reported, external.

    A spokesman for the Home Office said his case will be progressed in line with immigration rules.

    Blocked railways lines have been reopened after a lorry hit a bridge earlier today.

    Network Rail engineers have now repaired the track between Attleborough and Thetford after the lorry struck the railway bridge near Eccles Road station at about 05:30.

    Planning permission to convert the former Southwold Hospital for community use, with nine dwellings, is being recommended for approval this evening.

    Southgen, a community benefit society set up by Save Our Southwold, external, is hoping to exchange contracts with the NHS before Christmas.

    It will then issue community shares to help develop the site.

    The society wants to redevelop the site to include a library, creche and business centre alongside the residential units.

    His remix with Beyonce is currently topping the UK chart (and is due to stay there on Friday, the same goes for his album Divide) and now there's another version of Perfect coming.

    Speaking to the Today show in the US, Ed confirmed: "I've got an Italian operatic version with Andrea Bocelli coming out.

    "It's just kind of a little present for Christmas. It's a really beautiful video that comes with it."

    The new duet will be released this Friday, 15 December.
