  2. Don't visit our beaches, council pleadspublished at 11:36 British Summer Time 14 May 2020

Council officials in East Sussex have urged visitors not to flock to their local beaches after coronavirus lockdown measures were eased across England after more than seven weeks of restrictions.

Rother District Council said there are concerns that an influx of people to popular beaches at Camber and Bexhill-on-Sea could put the area’s residents and visitors themselves at risk.

Officials said that as well as making social distancing impossible, the prospect of high numbers of people visiting the coastline is also concerning because there will be no lifeguard service at Bexhill all summer or at Camber until later in the season.

Council leader Doug Oliver said: “Our message to anyone thinking of travelling to Camber or Bexhill for a day on the beach is ‘please don’t’.

“We appreciate the rules have changed slightly, and people are desperate for life to return to normal, but large numbers of people on our beaches could risk a second spike in this deadly virus.”

The leader of Brighton and Hove City Council has pleaded with those who do not live in the area to "stay away" despite the easing of some lockdown restrictions.

Cllr Nancy Platts said there was an "ambiguity" in the Government's messaging that "we need to have explained rapidly in the days ahead".

She added: "Our priority is to keep people who live in the city safe. One concern is around how residents can maintain physical distancing in our busy city if we have an influx of visitors."

  12. Council's concern over loosening of rulespublished at 17:05 British Summer Time 11 May 2020

    Bob Dale
    BBC Live reporter

The leader of Brighton and Hove City Council says she fears the government's relaxation of the lockdown rules may cause cases of Covid-19 to go up in the city.

The Prime Minister announced on Sunday that people can now drive to further destinations, and spend time sitting or sunbathing at beauty spots.

But Nancy Platts, the leader of the Labour-controlled authority, says this could lead to Brighton receiving thousands of visitors.

    Quote Message

We don't want to give people a false sense of security because coronavirus hasn't left the city yet. We are still getting new cases".

She is criticising what she calls the government's "one size fits all" approach to lifting the lockdown, especially the new rules on being allowed to drive further.

    Quote Message

Some people will interpret that as being able to get in their car and travel to Brighton and Hove, maybe from London. What we don't want, while coronavirus is still in the city, is for the numbers to go back up".

  14. Police waiting for clarification on new rulespublished at 13:29 British Summer Time 11 May 2020

    Bob Dale
    BBC Live reporter

Sussex Police say they need more guidance from the government over the changes to the lockdown rules.

Over the Bank Holiday weekend the force issued nearly 200 penalty notices to people who had travelled to the beauty spots from outside the county, including 62 at Camber Sands.

Cars heading to Brighton were stopped on the A23, with non-locals being turned back, including one group from Milton Keyenes.

But Jo Shiner, the force’s deputy chief constable, told BBC Radio Sussex that she did not know if they would be able to do that next weekend, with the prime minister’s announcement that people can now drive to further destinations and spend time sitting or sunbathing.

    Quote Message

That’s the devil of the detail that we’ve got to wait for. We’re going to continue to police this in a pragmatic and proportionate way”.

A new temporary cycle lane has been put in place on the A270 Old Shoreham Road in Brighton and Hove as the government encourages more of us to travel by bike during the coronavirus pandemic.

The cycle lane has been painted from the junction with Hangleton Road in west Hove to The Drive where it will meet with the existing cycle lane network, Brighton and Hove City Council said.

The new cycle lane is about 1.7 miles in long, in both directions - 3.4 miles in total.

Residents' access to drives along the route will be unaffected, a council spokesman said.
