    Former Boyzone front man Ronan Keating is headlining this summer's Rochester Castle Concerts.

    The singer, whose hits include "When You Say Nothing At All" and "Life is a Rollercoaster", will perform in the grounds of the historic Kent castle on Thursday 12 July.

    Also performing at this year's concerts will be Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra (Weds 11 July) and UB40 featuring Ali, Astro and Mickey (Friday 13 July).

    An ambulance has been involved in one of two crashes on the A2 which has closed the road in both directions near Canterbury.

    The first crash involved a car and a lorry at just before 07:00 GMT on the coastbound carriageway, just after the Bridge junction.

    The London-bound carriageway was then closed just after 07:10 when a car and an ambulance crashed, Kent Police said.

    Motorists have been advised to expect delays and consider using alternate routes.

    Labour has gained Conservative MP Kelly Tolhurst's old council seat in Rochester with a huge swing of 26%.

    This is particularly interesting as the Medway towns were Labour under Blair.

    But, at the General Election, Corbyn’s Labour didn’t seem to have made huge strides against the Tories.

    There have been more than 1,000 suspensions at schools in Kent in just two years for physical assaults towards adults.

    Figures show secondary school staff across the country are three times more likely to be injured after being attacked at work than the average worker.

    The Department for Education said it has issued guidance to schools that "tough but proportionate" sanctions for misbehaviour are acceptable.

    Southern Water has said it will automatically compensate the accounts of customers who were left without water when frozen mains pipes started to thaw after last week's snow.

    Those who were without water for less than 12 hours will receive £25, those without water for more than 12 hours will receive £50, and those without water for more than 24 hours will receive £75.

    It said it would also be donating a £2,000 STEM-focused community grant, external to each school affected by the interruption to supplies.

    The schools will also be offered a workshop with engineers and scientists from the company.

    Southern Water said customers would be repaid within the next seven to 10 days.

    Kent's chief constable says Brexit is playing a role in the rise of hate crimes across the county.

    Alan Pughsley told the Kent Police and Crime Commissioner that differing opinions over Britain's decision to leave the European Union was one of the reasons why the number of hate crime offences reported to Kent Police has increased over the past 12 months.

    Speaking at the performance and delivery board meeting on Wednesday, he said: "More people have confidence to report it to us, and we have new and different emerging crime types reported to us in the hate crime arena that we didn't see historically.

    "So I'm not going to say the reason for it - whether it's Brexit or not, but some of them are related to Brexit-style allegations."

  14. Harassment and stalking offences rise in Kentpublished at 15:59 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2018

    The combined number of harassment and stalking offences reported to Kent Police rose by more than 30% last year, according to the force's chief constable.

    Alan Pughsley said harassment complaints stood at 3,941 in December 2017 - compared to 1,135 in December 2016.

    There was also a 167% increase of stalking offences year-on-year, although the number of reported offences are relatively low as it relates to new legislation.

    In total, harassment and stalking offences have increased 33% year-on-year.

    Kent Police has now applied the recommendations from a major report on harassment and stalking, published last year by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services.

    Proposals for a high-speed rail link between the the existing HS1 which links Kent and London, Gatwick and Heathrow airports, and the Great Western Main Line, north of Heathrow have been unveiled.

    So called HS4Air was developed by London-based engineering consultants, Expedition.

    The firm said HS4Air would provide fast direct rail access to Gatwick and Heathrow airports from major cities to the north and west of London.

    Hampshire Constabulary, external is looking for 31-year-old Noel Ward after a woman in her 70s was defrauded out of £38,000 in the Southampton area.

    On 23 October last year the lady was told to buy expensive Rolex watches as payment for gardening work, which was not actually carried out.

    The woman was then asked to buy more watches worth £71,000, but police were alerted by the bank when she tried to transfer the money into her current account.

    Mr Ward also has links to Wiltshire, Dorset, Surrey, and Essex.
