  12. Thousands of homes without waterpublished at 07:20 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2018

    Hamish Mureddu-Reid
    BBC News Online, South East

More than 7,000 homes in Lenham and 1,000 homes in Ashford are without water, or with very low water pressure, Southern Water says.

The company said it was dealing with burst water pipes across the South East, with the highest concentration of damaged pipes in the Sittingbourne area of Kent, although homes in Sussex are also still being affected.

Supply problems started on Saturday as snow and ice began to melt, affecting the frozen pipes.

Southern Water apologised to customers across Kent, Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire who either had low water pressure, or no water at all over the weekend.

On Sunday about 6,000 households in Sussex were without water after pipes burst as they thawed.

The water company has urged its customers to check their own properties for leaks and arrange for them to be repaired.

Meanwhile, Highworth Grammar School for Girls in Ashford, The Lenham School and Lenham Primary are closed.
