    Police want to know how a man found wandering in a Newcastle street had been seriously injured.

    Residents in Elswick reported a man banging on doors and windows early yesterday.

    Officers found a 25-year-old with a number of serious injuries, wearing shorts, a t-shirt and nothing on his feet.

    He was taken to hospital where he was treated for suspected breaks and numerous cuts and is now in a stable condition. None of his injuries are believed to be life threatening.

    Police don't know how he received his injuries and want anyone who may have seen him to get in touch.

    The station and nearby buildings have been evacuated and a cordon has been put in place as a precaution.

    Two teenagers are to be questioned by police after the death of a 17-year-old at Marton in Middlesbrough at the weekend.

    Police say that while Joel Nichols' death is not currently being treated as suspicious, inquiries are continuing.

    Two boys aged 15 and 16 were arrested this morning. Cleveland Police has refused to say what they are being held on suspicion of.

    Police and ambulance crews were called to an address in Marton in Middlesbrough at on Friday night after Joel had become unwell.

    He died at James Cook University Hospital shortly afterwards

    An abusive teenager has been banned from swearing in public after Gateshead police received a flood of complaints about his behaviour.

    The 15-year-old was given an anti-social behaviour injunction after police received numerous complaints about young people gathering in groups and intimidating residents on the Beacon Lough estate.

    The teenager was identified as a ringleader.

    He ignored warnings and the civil order means he will now have to engage with the Jigsaw project, external, which is a programme to keep children out of trouble.He has also been made subject to a strict curfew and banned from a shopping area.The order also prevents him from using "abusive, insulting, intimidating or threatening language" around other members of the public.

    If he ignores the order he could end up before the criminal courts.

    Leisure centres in County Durham are reducing plastic waste by stopping the use of blue overshoes in swimming pool changing areas.

    The county council says that will cut plastic waste by 2.4 tonnes every year.

    Nigel Dodds, the council's strategic manager for sport and leisure, said: "Pool users are being urged to keep changing facilities clean by going barefoot or bringing along clean indoor footwear.”

    All 12 leisure centres are taking part in the campaign, external which will see the plastic overshoes eliminated by the end of November.

  14. Fossil collector rescued following Staithes landslidepublished at 07:17

    A fossil collector had to be rescued after becoming trapped up to his waist in mud following a landslide in North Yorkshire.

    Fishermen called emergency services at about 20:15 on Saturday after spotting the man trapped near Staithes.

    Staithes Coastguard said the fishermen had helped free the man from the mud and debris by the time they arrived.

    The coastguard said it had been an "extremely challenging rescue" and appealed for people not to risk their lives collecting fossils from cliff faces which are "prone to land slips".
