1. Bakery plan in slower cookerpublished at 13:01 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2018

It will take another month to find out whether a new Greggs bakery will open in North Shields, amid fears over its impact on childhood obesity at a nearby school.

Plans to open a Greggs at the Collingwood Centre, just 400 metres from John Spence High School, were due before North Tyneside Council's planning committee tomorrow and were recommended for approval, despite warnings from health chiefs.

But a decision is now being deferred until the end of November at the earliest to give the giant bakery chain more time to address concerns about cooking odours.

The council's environmental health officer told the planning committee to refuse the application due to "insufficient information" on its extraction equipment.

But Greggs request for further time to address the issue was agreed.

A 73-name petition against the development cites concerns over childhood obesity, cooking smells, litter and vermin problems.

  4. Call for Airbnb clampdown in Newcastlepublished at 11:36 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2018

    Daniel Holland
    Local Democracy Reporter

Calls have been made for new restrictions on the use of Airbnb properties in Newcastle, amid fears that homes being rented out will hamper efforts to get more people to live in the city centre.

Newcastle City Council said it had dealt with a number of complaints over residential properties being used as Airbnb accommodation without the proper permission.

The house-sharing website operates a 90-day limit on the number of days a property can be used as an Airbnb in London, but there are no such restrictions outside the capital.

Some city councillors want a similar policy to be put in place for Newcastle, that would stop homes being constantly rented out to tourists, including hen and stag parties.

Airbnb said it had a "zero tolerance approach" to anti-social behaviour.

A spokesman added: "The overwhelming majority of hosts and guests on Airbnb are good neighbours and respectful travellers, and collectively boosted the North East economy by £31m last year alone."

Did you watch Police Interceptors last night?

As a massive fan of the show I made sure I set a reminder on my phone so I didn't miss the last episode featuring our region.

Durham Constabulary officers were involved in 56 episodes of the Chanel 5 show and I have to admit I watched every single one.

A Durham Constabulary spokesperson said: "We hope we've helped shaped the public perception of who we are and what we do and we're proud to have been part of the show.

"We're now passing the baton to another force but we hope you continue watching."
