    Officers are searching for the tenants of an abandoned Sunderland home after they found cannabis with an estimated street value of £96,000 in the loft.

    Around 120 plans have been seized by police from the home on Eden House Road, after being discovered on Saturday when the property's landlady had contacted the police with the hope of tracing the tenants who'd stopped paying their rent.

    When the police entered the the property they came across the Class B substance.

    Neighbourhood beat manager, PC Alastair Stewart, said: "The public are so often our eyes and ears in the local community and this case proves no different.

    "I would encourage residents to continue reporting issues to us so we can have an accurate picture of what is happening and where we are making progress."

  7. Off-duty police officer near Blaydon hailed a heropublished at 17:30 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2018

    An off-duty police officer who saved the lives of two school children who'd fallen into the River Tyne near Blaydon has been hailed a "hero".

    It comes after a nine-year-old boy who had been playing next to the water earlier this month slipped into the water.

    The boy's 12-year-old sister jumped in after to try and save him but the freezing water took hold of them and the pair struggled to keep their heads above the water as the current separated them.

    Off-duty police officer Nikki Marshall spotted something was wrong while out for a run with her dog and immediately jumped in and grabbed the girl, before going back in to bring her brother to safety as well.

    The pair were taken to hospital as a precaution, but are now back home.

    Nikki has now been put forward for a commendation to recognise her bravery.

    Durham University have discovered that dogs could be trained to sniff out people infected with the malaria parasite

    Experts found that the animals were able to smell disease in clothes worn by infected children.

    It's hoped this could eventually lead to the method being used as a non-invasive way to test people for the condition at borders and ports.

    Researchers say this could help stop the spread of malaria to new countries and will also ensure people, who may not know they have the disease, get treatment quicker.

    Hartlepool Council has secured £280,000 to help combat crisis-level obesity.

    New figures show 29% of reception children and 40% of year six children are obese or overweight, with some being treated for type two diabetes.

    The funding will be used to launch a four-year project in 2019, offering increased help to 350 families identified as obese and at risk of ill health.

    Dr Pat Riordan is Interim Deputy Director of Public Health for Hartlepool Borough Council says the authority needs to act now for the sake of the future adult population.

    Three men have been jailed after their cousin was stabbed to death in a violent street brawl.

    Kieran Ibitson murdered 27-year-old Steven Willis outside his father's house in Normanby in April.

    The violent attack came hours after a fight at a wake following a family feud.

    Ibitson, 21, was this afternoon sentenced to 22 years in prison at Teesside Crown Court.

    His cousins Dominic and Mark Pickering were both found guilty of manslaughter and were both sentenced to 10 years each in prison.

    Two North East popstars have once again been named in Heat Magazine's list of wealthiest names under 30.

    South Shields stars, Jade Thirlwell and Perrie Edwards from the Little Mix have jumped from 10th to 6th place this year - as the group are earning an estimated £48m.

    That's believed to be £20m more than the year before.

    The rise is partly due to concerts and various endorsements, from dry shampoo to fashion dolls.

    I love the 5 November - wrapping up in layers and braving the cold to attend the spectacular firework displays in our region.

    Well one village in North Yorkshire is putting on their first bonfire event in years and it's for a slightly different reason to what you might think.

    Moorsholm Youth Club have teamed up with older residents to put on the free celebration for the community in the hope it'll loneliness among residents.

    It's part of a lottery funded inactive called 'our communities matter' which aims to tackle the isolation many old and young people feel in the rural areas of the Tees Valley.

    Plans to open four new shops and a gym in Shiremoor, North Tyneside, have been rejected by councillors in a bid to save the area's trees and wildlife.

    Members of the council's planning committee voted against the plans to expand a major new retail development next to Holystone roundabout by a narrow margin of five to four on Tuesday morning after concerns were raised about the project.

    Councillor Muriel Green said: "I am concerned about the biodiversity.

    "I have seen too many estates in the borough where there have been lots of promises made about replacing parts of the vegetation with various flora and trees, and it either has not happened or has happened 20 years later or has not been successful."

    She added: "When you come off the A19 there is quite a wealth of vegetation, mature trees that cannot be replaced.

    "I am not against the scheme, don't get me wrong, but I don't think enough consideration has been given to the biodiversity and the vegetation surrounding it."

    Public Health England describe it as one of the most significant issues across the country and predict a "tidal wave of ill health".

    Hartlepool Council says it needs to act now for the sake of the future adult population.

    The money will be spent on on offering bespoke intervention to 350 families in the town identified as obese and at risk of ill health.
